Los cubanos le ponen mucha pasión a todo lo que tiene que ver con el fútbol, como mismo puede suceder en cualquier otro lugar del mundo. Sin embargo, cuando se trata de jugarlo, esa misma pasión no se logra traducir en calidad. Desde que era pequeño, y siempre que paso cerca de alguna cancha donde estén practicando o jugando, me quedo un rato para poder observar como se desenvuelven los que se encuentran involucrados.
La conclusión que siempre saco es la misma: a los cubanos no se nos da bien jugar al fútbol. Y es que cuando yo comparo cómo se juega acá y cómo se juega, por ejemplo en Brasil, o España, me puedo dar cuenta que los movimientos, velocidad, técnicas, pensamiento táctico, etcétera, para nada se asemejan. Y no es que en Cuba el fútbol se empezó a jugar ayer, de hecho ya llevamos más de 100 años de liga futbolera, lo juegan todas las edades, y hasta tenemos varios jugadores que juegan a nivel profesional en otras ligas, sobre todo a nivel Centroamérica y el Caribe.
En más de 100 años solo hemos participado en una Copa Mundial y si más no recuerdo fue por invitación, en una época cuando la "guerra se hacía con calma", como se dice en un animado muy popular en la isla caribeña. Lo cierto según mi criterio, es que los genes no nos acompañan a la hora de desarrollo en este deporte, como sí lo puede ser en el caso del béisbol, dónde a pesar de que llevamos años "disfrutando" de un campeonato nacional de mala calidad, de alguna forma u otra nuestros peloteros siguen llegando a jugar al más alto nivel en las Grandes Ligas, incluso convirtiéndose en figuras mediáticas por su calidad.
Cubans put a lot of passion into everything that has to do with soccer, as can happen in any other place in the world. However, when it comes to playing it, that same passion does not translate into quality. Since I was a child, and whenever I pass by a field where they are practicing or playing, I stay for a while to observe how those involved are performing.
The conclusion I always draw is the same: we Cubans are not good at playing soccer. And when I compare how the game is played here and how it is played, for example in Brazil or Spain, I can see that the movements, speed, techniques, tactical thinking, etc., are not at all similar. And it is not that in Cuba soccer started to be played yesterday, in fact we have been playing soccer for more than 100 years, it is played by all ages, and we even have several players who play at a professional level in other leagues, especially in Central America and the Caribbean.
In more than 100 years we have only participated in one World Cup and if I remember correctly it was by invitation, at a time when the "war was made calmly", as they say in a very popular cartoon in the Caribbean island. In my opinion, the truth is that genes do not accompany us when it comes to development in this sport, as it can be in the case of baseball, where despite the fact that we have been "enjoying" a poor quality national championship for years, somehow or other our players continue to play at the highest level in the Major Leagues, even becoming media figures due to their quality.
Todo lo contrario ocurre con el hermano pequeño del fútbol: la variante en sala. Aquí sí somos mucho más certeros. La explosividad y los reflejos con los que se juega son mucho más acordes a las capacidades físicas de nuestros atletas. Visualmente es mucho más parecido lo que veo en las calles, en las canchas y en los jugadores de nuestra selección, a lo que observo en que ocurre en otras latitudes del planeta. En este formato ya se ha clasificado seis veces a la Copa Mundial y por méritos propios. La mejor ubicación en estas lides ha sido un 12º lugar, nada mal si lo compramos a su hermano mayor sobre césped y con 11 jugadores por equipo.
La última de las participaciones en Mundiales está ocurriendo en vivo, torneo que empezó este sábado y dónde sufrimos una derrota de proporciones humillantes ante el siempre potente Brasil. Los próximos partidos serán versus las selecciones de Tailandia y Croacia, dos selecciones que nos deben mayorear también, aunque espero que no con las mismas diferencias de goles. A pesar de la derrota, este equipo me llena de orgullo, pues se le nota un potencial diferente, además de que se encuentran libres de complejos y presión. Ellos, aunque sean inferiores en el papel, siempre van a por la victoria, como debe de ser, pues al final es lo más parecido en términos de diversión a lo que encontramos en el barrio.
The opposite is true for soccer's little brother: the indoor variant. Here we are much more accurate. The explosiveness and reflexes with which the game is played are much more in line with the physical capabilities of our athletes. Visually, what I see in the streets, on the fields and in the players of our national team is much more similar to what I observe happening in other latitudes of the planet. In this format, we have already qualified six times for the World Cup and on our own merits. The best place in these competitions has been a 12th place, not bad if we compare it to its older brother on grass and with 11 players per team.
The last of the World Cup participations is happening live, a tournament that started this Saturday and where we suffered a defeat of humiliating proportions against the always powerful Brazil. The next matches will be against the teams of Thailand and Croatia, two teams that we should also be able to beat, although I hope not with the same goal differences. Despite the defeat, this team fills me with pride, because they show a different potential, and they are free of complexes and pressure. They, although inferior on paper, always go for the win, as it should be, because in the end it is the closest thing in terms of fun to what we find in the neighborhood.
Aún así ,por el fútbol sala no se hace lo suficiente para que se desarrolle en busca de resultados más relevantes. Cómo en casi todos los deportes colectivos que se practican en Cuba, no existe una liga regular, y cuando la hay se juega apenas en dos semanas y ya, eso es todo hasta el siguiente año. No hay implementos, no hay nada. Lo que mejor tenemos son los terrenos, pues en la mayoría de las provincias existe algún tabloncillo con la calidad suficiente para llevar a cabo un torneo o para entrenar.
Creo que algún día se le puede ganar a Brasil o a cualquier otro equipo "purasangre", pero para eso necesitamos esa inversión en una liga larga, estructura, organización y trabajo en las categorías inferiores, gestionar contratos en las ligas extranjeras para que poco a poco lograr tener una masa de jugadores del "sala" con la suficiente calidad para dar un salto mayor y por supuesto para que vayan abriendo el camino a nuevos jugadores en el camino. Me parece que debemos atender un poco más a esta variante, aunque sin dejar de atender al hermano mayor, pues tal vez se ponga celoso.

Even so, not enough is done for indoor soccer to develop in search of more relevant results. As in almost all collective sports practiced in Cuba, there is no regular league, and when there is one, it is only played for two weeks and that's it, that's it until the following year. There are no implements, there is nothing. The best we have are the grounds, because in most of the provinces there are some small boards with enough quality to hold a tournament or to train.
I believe that someday we can beat Brazil or any other "thoroughbred" team, but for that we need that investment in a long league, structure, organization and work in the lower categories, manage contracts in foreign leagues so that little by little we can have a mass of "sala" players with enough quality to make a bigger leap and of course to open the way for new players along the way. It seems to me that we should pay a little more attention to this variant, but without neglecting the older brother, because he might get jealous.
