Culminó la 2 fecha de la CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE para Cuba desde el día de ayer, cuando enfrentaron en el estadio Antonio Maceo de la provincia de Santiago de Cuba (casualmente vivo allí) a su similar de Nicaragua. En la primera fecha el equipo cubano había medido fuerzas con la selección jamaiquina, un rival de los más fuertes del grupo y al cual se le sacó un empate a cero goles que se convirtió en el momento en una hazaña para los seguidores de nuestra selección. Imagínense con un hombre de menos aguantarles todo un partido a Jamaica y sin permitir goles a una de las naciones más poderosas del Centroamérica y el Caribe.

The 2nd date of the CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE for Cuba ended yesterday, when they faced at the Antonio Maceo stadium in the province of Santiago de Cuba (I happen to live there) their similar team Nicaragua. In the first matchday, the Cuban team had played against the Jamaican national team, one of the strongest rivals in the group and against whom they played to a scoreless draw that became a feat for the followers of our national team at the time. Imagine being a man down to hold Jamaica for a whole game and not allowing any goals to one of the most powerful nations in Central America and the Caribbean.
Hasta ahí todo bien. El partido de ayer martes contra Nicaragua fue todo un desastre a pesar de que terminó en empate esta vez con marcador de 1 gol por bando. En la alineación no aparecía como titular el guardameta que por derecho propio se lo ha ganado, Raiko Arozarena; sobre el terreno el equipo se vio falta de ideas ofensivas, más de dos veces se encontraron con contras con ventaja numérica y nunca encontraron la manera de definir ya sea por error en la conducción, en el pase final o hacia los espacios vacíos, el gol que nos adelantó en el marcador se obtuvo gracias a un penal convertido por el mediocampista Karel Espino. Este gol fue defendido una vez más con uñas y dientes, pero en esta ocasión el gol del empate llegó en el último minuto de 6 agregados en la segunda parte. Casi lo tuvimos aunque jugamos mal.
Hace algún tiempo empezar con dos empates seguidos contra dos rivales de peso para nuestro nivel, se pudiese haber visto como positivo teniendo en cuenta la política deportiva del país que impedía el crecimiento de fútbol en Cuba. Pero hoy día ya existe un cambio de mentalidad con relación al mismo, y se ha permitido el regreso de futbolistas que juegan en varias latitudes del mundo y que antes no podían defender la camiseta nuestra.
So far so good. Yesterday's match against Nicaragua was a disaster despite the fact that it ended in a draw, this time with a score of 1 goal per side. In the lineup the goalkeeper Raiko Arozarena, who by his own right has earned it, did not appear as a starter; on the field the team lacked offensive ideas, more than twice they found themselves with counterattacks with numerical advantage and never found the way to define either by mistake in driving, in the final pass or into the empty spaces, the goal that put us ahead on the scoreboard was obtained thanks to a penalty converted by midfielder Karel Espino. This goal was once again defended tooth and nail, but this time the equalizer came in the last minute of 6 added in the second half. We almost had it even though we played poorly.
Some time ago, starting with two draws in a row against two rivals of weight for our level, could have been seen as positive considering the sports policy of the country that prevented the growth of soccer in Cuba. But today there is already a change of mentality in relation to it, and it has allowed the return of players who play in various latitudes of the world and who previously could not defend our jersey.
Ahora en mi opinión dos cosas positivas: la primera es el tremendo empate con Jamaica que pienso que quizás lo cogimos fríos pero tampoco puedo minimizar ese performance de los cubanitos; lo segundo es la reincorporación a la selección de nuestro futbolista más ranqueado Onel Hernández, que por temas de lesión se había perdido las últimas fechas oficiales.
De lo negativo: pienso que las constantes rotaciones del once inicial no es saludable si se busca establecer un estilo de juego constante y equilibrado. Necesitamos una identidad en la cancha, según los jugadores con los que contemos en cada convocatoria. El técnico principal cubano Yunielys Castillo debe dejar de improvisar (al menos es la impresión que me da) en cuanto a las convocatorias que realiza, llamar a los mejores atletas que nos puedan representar, mandar a la cancha a los que mejores están y enfocarse en encontrar además, esa identidad de juego que ya mencioné más arriba y que tanta pedimos los aficionados de una vez por todas. La decisión de no poner a Raico en el partido muy lamentable e injustificada según mi criterio.

On the negative side: I think that the constant rotations of the starting eleven is not healthy if we are looking to establish a constant and balanced style of play. We need an identity on the field, according to the players we have in each call-up. Cuban head coach Yunielys Castillo should stop improvising (at least that is the impression he gives me) in terms of the calls he makes, call the best athletes who can represent us, send to the field those who are best and focus on finding also that identity of play that I mentioned above and that we fans are asking for once and for all. The decision not to put Raico in the game was very regrettable and unjustified in my opinion.
De todas maneras faltan aún fechas para definir posiciones, no creo que vayamos a mejor, pero debemos dar siempre un voto de confianza. Tal vez nos sorprendan los acontecimientos que están por venir y nos logren convencer al fin de que la selección nacional de Cuba ha evolucionado finalmente.
