Summertime
Warm weather brings people together, standing around a hot fire to enjoying a chin-wag (thirsty work), a beer, followed with braai (BBQ).
Stoking up a fire is thirsty work, time to bring out Durban Poison – South Africa’s first cannabis beer
Simple plain green bottle, not an elaborate fussy label staying with dark green theme and gold trim to give the true meaning to green and gold, a reference used in our youth to Durban Poison Plant. Resembling the essence of a cannabis flower, clearly shown on the cap in black and white emblem.
Being the first cannabis beer to launch, with such a recognizable name, it was one I simply had to pick up to try. Brewed in Durban the price was within the range of large breweries pricing which was surprising, so I picked up a six pack to see what our local lads are up to.
Appearance
Light crisp golden beer with a substantial head when pouring, it looks similar to our local Castle and imported Heineken beers. Head subsided while I was photographing indicating not to heavy holding foam on top for too long a period.
Taste
Tasted refreshingly light, slightly sweeter than the beers I normally drink, with an earthy taste which I think reminds you of hops replaced with cannabis sativa (hemp) added into the beer when brewing.
After taste was pleasing, you only really start to taste the 'added brew' of cannibis after the first few mouthfuls (perhaps I was just thirsty), a pleasant drink to enjoy on a hot day.
Now I will have to be on the look out since Poison City Brewery have a couple more surprise beers to find and taste test.
With a menacing name that hints at its powerful psychoactivity, Durban Poison is a pure South African sativa landrace. It is a bold and sticky variety that's well adapted to a variety of growing conditions. Durban Poison boasts a THC content of between 15% and 25%. ... Buds of Durban Poison are medium to large in size. Source
