So Hivers Beer Saturday Danger Pub Crawl. If I’m being honest it’s not really a pub crawl as I’m driving but I will have a 1/2 of cider in a couple and take a look at some of the pubs along the Exeter Canal Basin and city end of the canal.

Starting off a hike of around 500m down the city side of the canal you arrive at the first stop “The Port Royal”.
A large modernised old Victorian pub that is as much a restaurant as pub with lots of seating and the lunch menu seems excellent anyway and the do have a good selection of beers too.
There is plenty of outside seating so if you just fancy a beer by the river it’s got you covered.
Nice and safe here with a handrail and a wall at the edge of the river.
Back towards the Basin and climb up Colleton Hill about 200m away from the Basin the second smaller pub is “The Hour Glass Inn”. This one is tiny compared to the Port Royal. Inside there is a cozy little bar with local beer from the Exeter Brewery, and a good food menu. Unfortunately it’s only open lunch time and from 5 in the evening on weekdays so it was a wasted walk if your there in the week 😞
So Hivers back down the hill and back along the canal basin no handrail or wall here and the next stop is “On The Waterfront” another restaurant pub. If you like your Pizza this is a great place. Lots of seating inside and out if it’s a nice day.
Lastly there is the “The Prospect Inn” one of the oldest pubs on the Exeter Canal Basin it opened as the a Fountain in the early 1800 but the name was changed in the mid 1950, it was know as a bit of disreputable house in the early days with drunkenness and fights. With several drownings from drunks falling in the basin no handrails and even less health and safety. These days the handrails start back up at the “On The Waterfront” so a bit less of a hazard. Now it’s a very nice friendly pub with some good local craft beers and ciders.
So finally Hivers I guess I should tell you what I”m drinking unfortunately I’m driving so it’s just my second half of Devon Red a local cider from Sandford Orchards in Crediton.
It’s a nice tasty 4.5 ABV dry cider named after the rich red soil in that part of the county, a few more would have gone down very nicely but then its a train home but maybe that’s an idea for another trip up and I can fit in a few more of the pubs around the Quay.
