Greetings, dear Hive community! I welcome you to my humble blog, in which I wanted to share with you what a day in the life of a university professor is like. This week we are already starting activities at the University and the first thing we must do is prepare the laboratory material so that it is ready when the laboratory practices begin.
Saludos apreciada comunidad de Hive! Les doy la bienvenida a mi humilde blog que en estas líneas he querido compartir con ustedes como es un día en la vida de un profesor universitario. Esta semana ya estamos empezando actividades en la Universidad y lo primero que debemos hacer es preparar el material de laboratorio para que esté listo cuando comiencen las prácticas de laboratorio.
Thus, we arrived at the Faculty in the morning to go to the teaching laboratories, this was a pending task since with the political turbulence that occurred after the elections in Venezuela, when the political climate calmed down we had already had our vacations so the faculty was closed until now.
Así, llegamos a la Facultad en la mañana para dirigirnos a los laboratorios docentes, este fue un trabajo pendiente ya que con la turbulencia política ocurrida después de las elecciones en Venezuela, cuando el clima político se calmó ya nos había caído las vacaciones así que la facultad estuvo cerrada hasta ahora.
On the way we met the "love kitty" a tender kitten that arrived at the Faculty a while ago and is very affectionate, he always greets us when we arrive at the dean's spaces.
En el camino nos conseguimos con el "michi del amor" un tierno gatito que llego hace un tiempo a la Facultad y es de lo más cariñoso, siempre nos saluda cuando llegamos a los espacios del decanato.

With the chaos that was finishing the laboratory practices last semester on the edge of the elections, the laboratory is not as messy as I expected to find it. Our main task here is to wash and sterilize glassware for bacterial culture because these practices must be carried out in a sterile environment.
Con el caos que fue terminar las prácticas de laboratorio el semestre pasado al filo de las elecciones, el laboratorio no esta tan desordenado como esperaba encontrarlo. Nuestra principal labor aquí es principalmente lavar y esterilizar el material de vidrio para cultivo de bacterias porque estas prácticas deben realizarse en un ambiente de esterilidad.
To properly sterilize glassware such as test tubes, vials, beakers or graduated cylinders, it is necessary to keep it covered but not sealed, which is why it is necessary to create gauze and cotton plugs. This is the most laborious part of the day.
Para esterilizar correctamente material de vidrio como tubos de ensayos, fiolas, beakers o cilindros graduados es necesario mantenerlo cubierto más no sellado por eso se hace necesario crear tapones de gasa y algodón, esta e la parte más laboriosa del día de hoy.
To create these plugs, we cut a square gauze into 2 parts and in each of them we place a portion of cotton and proceed to cover it.
Para crear estos tapones cortamos una gasa cuadrada en 2 partes y en cada una de ellas colocamos una porción de algodon y procedemos a cubrirlo.
Then we proceed to close it with a strong knot and cut off the excess gauze that remains and that's it! We now have our gauze and cotton plug, this will help us maintain the sterility of the material when we remove it from the equipment that is in charge of autoclaving it.
Luego procedemos a cerrarlo con un fuerte nudo y cortamos el exceso de gasa que haya quedado y listo! Ya tenemos nuestro tapón de gasa y algodón, esto nos ayudará a mantener la esterilidad del material cuando lo retiremos del equipo que se encarga de autoclavarlo.
In the end, we created 9 special plugs to sterilize this type of vials used to record bacterial growth by densitometry, that is, by light scattering. Now what follows is the sterilization process.

Once all the material we want to sterilize has been introduced, we close the door, which as you can see is sealed due to the high pressures generated by this type of equipment, and we wait a period of 16 minutes. Afterwards, when the cycle ends, we must wait at least 1 hour for the temperature and pressure to drop. Doing so before then can generate a water vapor leak that can burn us.
Una vez introducido todo el material que queremos esterilizar cerramos la compuerta que como pueden ver es blindada debido a las grandes presiones que genera esta clase de equipos y esperamos un periodo de tiempo de 16 minutos. Posteriormente cuando termina su ciclo debemos esperar al menos 1 hora a que baje la temperatura y la presión, hacerlo antes puede generar un escape de vapor de agua que puede quemarnos.
When we can finally open the device and remove the material, it is still wet from the water vapor, so the next step is to store it in a stove and leave it at an average temperature of 55°C to dry. You may wonder if the sterility of the material is not lost, and the answer is that as long as the plugs that we carefully made remain, everything will be fine. This is how we ended our day in the teaching laboratories, mission accomplished!
Cuando finalmente podemos abrir el equipo y retirar el material, este se encuentra húmedo por el vapor de agua así que que el siguiente paso es guardarlo en una estufa y dejarlo a una temperatura promedio de 55°C para que se seque, te preguntarás si no se pierde la esterilidad del material y la respuesta es que mientras mantenga los tapones que cuidadosamente hicimos todo estará bien. Así terminamos nuestra jornada en los laboratorios docentes, misión cumplida!

We returned late from the Faculty with the satisfaction of having done our duty and the weather was already ready to start raining, but then spectacular moments like this happen: a sunset with the sky about to be covered by rain clouds. Volvimos tarde de la Facultad con la satisfacción del deber cumplido y ya el tiempo estaba como para ponerse a llover, pero entonces suceden momentos tan espectaculares como este: una puesta de sol con el cielo a punto de ser cubierto por nubes de lluvia. Esto generó un efecto de luz ocre muy tenue que bañaba toda la ciudad, éste era el momento que les debía en mi post anterior.
