For these weeks entry #ccc #streetart contest #week219 hosted by @digi-me, i have got these beautiful mural art display of the ekombi dancers created by IFERE, NLOWE EDET 14/EV/FA/303, I couldn't made findings about the artist cause the work is dated far back as at 2014, the work is a project crafted by a final year student of the university of uyo, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria...
About this amazing art display...THE EKOMBI DANCERS
Dance is an important part of Nigerian culture. Our traditional dances are as diverse as our people and the different dance styles reflect our rich diversity, different dances are used for different occassions, the traditional dances displayed at festivals are different from other ceremonial occassions, there are many dances associated with each tribe in Nigeria due to our multi-ethnicity, tribes, tongue and languages..there are many dance associatedwith each tribe in Nigeria, coming across this painting of the Efik maiden dancing to the gracious rhythm of the EKOMBI DANCE which is one symbolic attributes of the efik/ibibio people of calaber, cross River state, Nigeria.
The Ekombi dance is performed primarily to entertain the audience, in the process however it tells a story about an aspect of the life of the Efik people, The performance consist of dance routine, costumes, make up, properties music and songs which entertain and reveal aspect of the beliefs of the efik people, the ekombi dance mimics the waves of the sea as the efik are Coastal people with their main occupation being fishing
Indeed The beauty of ekombi dance is seen in the gentle flow of undulating body parts, the right balance struck between obscene eccenteicity and graceful swaying. It is a beautiful and entertaining dance in which maidens are dresssed in multi-colored attires sewn in a mini skirt and blouse form heavily beaded on every limb and waist, holding the tail hair of horse in their both hands, the ekombi dancers whining gracefully to the rhythmical beats of Efik drummers in the movement of ocean tides.
Therefore to showcase the beauty of our rich cultural heritage the maidens are adorned with exceptionally beautiful and colorful coatumes and accessories like necklaces brass combs and elaborate hairdo, facial and body make-up. The dancers graciously whining all their body parts with ease, flowing easily to the beats, songs and chants of the drummers turning here and there and their entire bodies mimicing the gentle flow of the ocean tide, with such a beautiful smile on their faces, making you want to join them
it is one of the most reserved dances that is predominant among the efik/ibibio people of the southern part of Nigeria, particularly Cross River state and Akwa Ibom state in Nigeria
