Commonly called "sacred lotus" or "Indian lotus", the lotus is an aquatic perennial plant of the Nelumbonaceae family. Native to Asia, the lotus is a sacred flower in the Buddhist religion. Many cultivars have been developed from the species Nelumbo nucifera.
