Market Friday | Clarks in Jamaica and White Rose Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

It's here!

The second edition of Clarks in Jamaica with the full story was published just this April. This is a beautiful looking book, updated from the first edition in 2012, with lots of extra anecdotes and deep dives into Jamaican fashion and music.

From the first arrival of Clarks in Jamaica in the early 1920s through stories of pilgrimages to the Quaker firm in Street in Somerset and Clarks as contraband imported in coffins from Florida, to fashion icons like the mesh marina and diamond socks, it's all here!

The photographs, quotations and stories are really lush.

These days, [Clarks] are worn by politicians. In his election campaign in 2020, Andrew Holness, the country’s prime minister, conspicuously wore Clarks, holding them in the air at public appearances. Source

You can get your copy of Clarks in Jamaica directly from the publisher One Love Books using PayPal (who knows, maybe you can pay in crypto) or at an Amazon store near you: ISBN-13 : 978-0956777393. It's on my wishlist!

I've been enjoying Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee supplied by White Rose Coffee Roasters (Hive's very own @c0ff33a).

In 1953, the Jamaican Government created the Coffee Industry Board (CIB) of Jamaica, a regulatory body established to protect the quality of Jamaican coffee. Jamaica was the first country in the world to establish a defined geographical location designated to a specific coffee brand, similar to that constructed by the French wine industry with the creation of the AOC (Appellation Origine Controlle). Many people believe Blue Mountain Coffee is the best in the world - I had to try it. White Rose Coffee Roasters offer 250g packs now, just right for home consumption. I also have to say White Rose has the fairest price available, that I've been able to find, in the UK. I also know that it was freshly roasted and ground immediately before it was sent to me (each pack is date marked). The aroma was heavenly!

It does have a very mellow taste, perfect with Fox's Golden Crunch Creams. I've noticed that my coffee consumption has increased since I received this pack. I have a cup nearly every day (it used to be, maybe, two or three times a week) and some days, like today, I enjoy a second cup.

Hmm, maybe I'd better put my next order in ...
