Monomad Challenge: Monochrome Water

Thank you for the opportunity to share 4 of my black and white images in this series focused around water. This is my submission for the monomad challenge.

Water can be a powerful element to photograph and it is a favorite subject of mine to shoot.

A simple reflection combined with intentional camera movement (ICM) can transform an ordinary scene into one with an abstract and minimal quality.

You can photograph water in its frozen state as seen in this alpine lake. The high winds and frigid air set the stage for this dramatic shot with clusters of ice on the frozen lake.

Waterfalls especially are a favorite element to photograph. You can increase your shutter speed to freeze the motion of the water to reveal details once hidden by the falling fast moving water. A long telephoto lens can be used to isolate your subject further.

Or you can slow down your shutter to smooth out the water as shown in this tiered waterfall scene. This can help create a calming image. A long exposure of 1/4 or 1/2 second usually works well.
