First Aid and Disaster Risk Reduction Management Training

Calamities are catastrophic events or a phenomenon that can harm damage or cause death to humans, plants, and animals. These are classified as natural or man-made. Examples of Natural calamities are earthquakes, typhoons, floods, landslides, and fire while pollution, explosion, and fire are some examples of calamities caused by humans or man-made. Some were caused by the human destruction of our ecosystem. It can't be controlled or stopped but the harm or damage can be prevented or minimized. All we need is to have proper knowledge of Disaster Risk Reduction Prevention and Control. The government organized an agency to monitor or task to respond whenever there are emergencies that happened especially caused by natural calamities.

Our school initiated a First Aid and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Orientation Workshop or Training last October 24, 2023. This activity was done in cooperation with the Municipal Disaster Risk Management Office Team of Tabogon. The purpose of this activity is to raise awareness and train student school leaders in the readiness to respond during emergencies. This activity was planned last July 2023, but because of a very hectic schedule, the activity was moved last month. After a long wait, the plan was realized.

This activity was participated by the class officers of School DRR, BAKODA Officers, SSG Officers, and selected teachers. The activity commenced with the opening program and was followed by the session proper. The Municipal Head of MDRRMO Tabogon encourages the students to participate actively in her discussion whenever she has questions. This is to check the participant's eagerness or willingness to learn by responding to the questions quickly. According to her the learnings acquired by the learner's participants are useful in the sense that they can't only serve their fellowmen during emergencies but also to their own family as well.

Morning Session

Her first discussion was about how to conduct first aid especially if someone was hurt with a knife. She said we should apply first aid directly by not pulling a knife. The doctor will be the one to pull out that knife since they conduct an X-ray to test the depth of the wound. She then discussed hazards, risks, and different situations wherein there is a need to respond immediately to save lives. She explained about earthquakes, the places in our neighboring municipality with faults and typhoons. The dos and don'ts during and after the earthquakes.

She also discussed preparedness during typhoons and heavy rainfall which will result in floods and landslides, especially near rivers and houses near hillsides. She added that climate change is the cause of this phenomenon. Climate Change is the result of the cutting of trees and too much carbon in the atmosphere caused by factories and smoke from vehicles. She also mentioned the water reservoir in town.

The last topic discussed is about fire. She mentioned the 5 types of fire: Class A, B, C, D, and K. Each type was based on the sources of fire and the specific type of control and prevention applicable for each type. The dos and don'ts when there is fire were also tackled.

Lunch Time

After the morning session, our school PTA served them a meal. We are very thankful for the support of our School PTA in every activity we will have in our school. They prepared to pack lunch for our 10 speakers coming from the MDRRMO office.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon session was the demo and return demo session on how to conduct first aid. CPR or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation to an adult and a child. This is an emergency lifesaving procedure when the heart stops beating. While the speaker talked and performed how to conduct CPR, I recalled my father who died of drowning, if there was a CPR conducted on him. That was a big regret I have. If I attended to him before he died and helped him save his life, maybe he is still alive at present. The next topic was how to save a person and a baby who suddenly swallowed food. After that was the demo on applying first aid to wounds, sprinting, bandaging, and how to carry an unconscious person.

The training ended at exactly 5:00 p.m. Certificates of recognition to the speaker were given. After that was the photo opportunity by each school organization that attended the training together with the speakers. The learners will be given a certificate of recognition too after giving their insights. That was a very fruitful and meaningful training. I'm so thankful to the MDRRMO Team of Tabogon for giving this opportunity to our learners.
