Greetings to hivers around the world! Today I would like to share with you my experience, as a mother and wife, on how to create a multicultural home environment.

¡Saludos a los hivers de todo el mundo! Hoy me gustaría compartirles mi experiencia, como madre y esposa, de cómo crear un ambiente en casa multicultural.

Nuestra casa, un lugar multicultural

My daughter, who will be 2 years old by the end of this month, I consider her a lucky girl to have parents from 2 different countries, dad is from Cuba and mom is from Venezuela. Although we speak the same language, Spanish, many of our words are totally different so we try to teach our daughter the meaning of the words in both countries so that she grows up with a broad knowledge of their origin.

At her young age she already has both nationalities, legally speaking, and at home her father and I encourage her to play those traditional games we grew up with, we teach her the nursery rhymes our mothers used to rock us with, it is even a tradition in Venezuela, my country, to lull our little ones to sleep by humming the national anthem and this is what I did with my baby since she was born. Today he is able to recognize the melody of the Venezuelan national anthem and that makes me very proud.

Mi hija, quien cumplirá 2 años para finales de este mes, considero que es una niña afortunada por tener padres originarios de 2 países diferentes, papá es de Cuba y mamá es de Venezuela. Aunque hablamos el mismo idioma, el español, muchas de nuestras palabras son totalmente diferentes así que tratamos que enseñarle a nuestra hija el significado de las palabras en ambos países para que crezca con el conocimiento amplio de su origen.

A su corta edad ya tiene ambas nacionalidades, en materia legal, y en casa su padre y yo la incentivamos a jugar aquellos juegos tradicionales con los que crecimos, le enseñamos las canciones infantiles con las que nuestras madres nos acunaban, incluso es tradición en Venezuela, mi país, arrullamls a nuestros pequeños trarareando el himno nacional y esto hice con mi bebé desde que nació. Hoy es capaz de reconocer la melodía del himno nacional venezolano y eso me da mucho orgullo.

Among the traditional games that we are teaching our daughter, little by little as she is old enough for games, are: the famous trompo, which consists of a small cone which we must spin with a string and we can lift it in our hand without letting it stop spinning and thus be the winner of the game.

Entre los juegos tradicionales que estamos enseñando a nuestra hija, poco a poco a medida que tenga la edad para los juegos, están: el famoso trompo, que consiste en un pequeño cono el cual debemos girar con un cordón y podemos levantarlo en la mano sin que deje de girar y así ser el ganador del juego.

La Perinola as we call this game in Venezuela is a ball with a hole that is tied to a stick and the objective is to introduce the ball into the stick. In Cuba it is called Bolero.

La Perinola como le llamamos en Venezuela a este juego que es una bola con un agujero que está amarrada a un palito y el objetivo es introducir la bola en el palito. En Cuba es llamado Bolero.

In Cuba they call Yoyo what in Venezuela we call Gurrufío, this game that is nothing more than a cord with a circle attached in the middle that is spun, is more a game of concentration and the fun is that we can make one at home and turn it into a family activity.

En Cuba llaman Yoyo a lo que en Venezuela llamamos Gurrufío, este juego que no es más que un cordón con un circulo sujeto en medio al que se hace girar, es más un juego de concentración y lo divertido es que podemos hacer uno en casa y convertirlo en una actividad familiar.

As well as these small differences we also find the Papalote as they call in Cuba what we call Papagayo that adorn the skies of our countries with beautiful colors and children love to fly them.

Also the Bolas according to Cubans and Metras according to Venezuelans, are the small marbles that children of all ages love.

Así como estas pequeñas diferencias también encontramos el Papalote como le llaman en Cuba a lo que nosotros llamamos Papagayo que adornan los cielos de nuestros países con los bellos colores y los niños adoran volarlas.

También las Bolas según los cubanos y Metras según los venezolanos, son las pequeñas canicas que les encantan a los niños de todas las edades.

We want to educate our little daughter with cultural values focused on maintaining and rescuing our traditions. For this we must sit down with her to play all these games, teach her their names and how to play them. We start with a beautiful domino, which is very important for both Cuban and Venezuelan culture, and represents an icon of board games. The child is not yet old enough to play it, but we allow her to become familiar with the pieces, to count them, to put them away and take them out of the box, to sort them into groups, and so we spend time with her teaching her things.

Queremos educar a nuestra pequeña hija con valores culturales enfocados en mantener y rescatar nuestras tradiciones. Para esto debemos sentarnos con ella a jugar todos estos juegos, enseñarle sus nombres y como jugarlos. Iniciamos con un bello dominó, que es muy importante para la cultura, tanto Cubana como venezolana, y que representa un ícono de los juegos de mesa. Todavía la niña no está en edad de jugarlo, pero permitimos que se familiarice con las piezas, que las cuente, que las guarde y las vuelva a sacar de su caja, que las ordene por grupos y así pasamos tiempo con ella enseñándole cosas.
