It's Snowing In April - Book Review

Went through my little library today and came across a book. One of the first books I’d read that made me fall in love with English books. English in the sense that the setting of the book borders London, Scotland and the like. I was trying to organize the library. But as expected, I got lost in the amazing pages of the book. Very much so, since it had been over five years since I read it last. The pages seemed clearer now. The storyline and the impact of the book, much more apt and sublime.

About The Book

Snow In April by Rosamunde Pilcher is a book about twenty-year-old, Caroline Cliburn. With her father dead, her stepmother, remarried and her elder, hippie brother, Angus Cliburn, estranged, Caroline and her little brother, Jody find home much more stifling than anticipated. Diana, their chic stepmother, who is nothing short of elegant, beautiful, high on social standing and in a bid to ‘keep things tidy within the family,” suggests and puts Caroline up to marry her younger brother, Hugh.

Hugh, an ostentatious but established and well-to-do man, does not see Jody in his future plans with Caroline and prefers that Diana and her husband, Shaun Carpenter, whisk Jody off to their new life in Canada while he’s off with the sister in wedded bliss. Caroline in a bid of desperation, with her world seemingly crashing on her, realizes to herself that the only way to not feel like a passenger in her own life is if she can find her estranged brother, Angus, who she was sure would take care of things and make it all okay.

Impulsively, she writes a rather hurried letter to Diana, promising to be back in a few days with Angus, and together with Jody and a beat-up car owned by their late father’s friend, Caleb, they begin the journey to Strathcorrie, Scotland from London, with the hopes of finding Angus. Unfortunately, they encounter a deadly blizzard and their car is promptly stuck in the snow. Teeth chattering and nearly freezing to death, they luckily find a massive house in the blinding snow and come to face Oliver Cairney, owner of the house, Cairney and that’s when things get interesting.

Oliver, a man recovering from the tragic loss of his brother and seeking to neatly sell off the family house to Duncan, his wealthy neighbour and continue his life in the city is astounded as the siblings crash into his life. He finds the whole situation annoying as their untimely arrival in his life seems to hinder his plans, which happen to include marrying Duncan’s daughter, Liz. But when unwittingly love blooms between him and Caroline, it sets a whole lot of other plans aflame. Gg

Will they find Angus? Will they have a chance of a new life? Caroline and Oliver, two individuals on the brink of terrible mistakes hope they can save themselves.

My Review and Rating

I think even though the book doesn’t become so interesting till they arrive at Cairney, the classy life of Diana proves sweet and scintillating at the same time. I enjoyed each page, the antics of Jodie, the cunningness of Liz, whose eyes are firmly set on Oliver, and all the drama that unfolds in Caroline’s life, it gives the book that perfect mix.

Now, I’ll emphasize that if you’re just looking for something sizzling, all heat and flames, Snow In April, just might not be for you but if you’re looking for an acute page-turner that you’re guaranteed to adore from beginning to end, this is definitely the book. It’s a wonderful weekend read and it has all the elements of excitement, intrigue and suspense. Snow In April is a book for book lovers who admire and appreciate charismatic and witty male leads. I give it a solid 4.7/5!!
