Rainbow Rowell's book tells the story of two young people living in an outcast neighbourhood. On the one hand, we have Park. A taciturn boy, with various cultural uneasiness and a passion for music. On the other, Eleanor, who arrives new to a neighbourhood where the first thing that catches the eye is her characteristic appearance. An everyday event, such as travelling by bus, will unite our protagonists, who will grow up and enjoy together comics, books, music and discover the meaning of pure, overwhelming, true and unique first love.
The novel begins with the arrival of Eleanor. She is the new girl, the different girl. She has just been reunited with her family after a year away and she has to face a new life, to start from scratch. A new school, a new environment and no friends to lend her a hand.
However, as soon as she gets on the bus, everyone turns their attention to her and her peculiar appearance, making her a perfect target for the school bullies. The only one who takes pity on her and agrees to share her seat is Park (although he is not at all amused). A quiet, Asian boy who dresses in black and devours comic books.
Eleanor's character has an overwhelming personality. Although at first glance she is presented as a self-confident girl who doesn't care what other people think and who is able to stand up to and deal with any situation, when we get to know her a little better we discover that she is not your typical protagonist. But he is a normal person, as any of us could be, and that, ironically, is what makes him special. He has the same complexes and insecurities that every teenager has, the same fears and worries, although perhaps he does have a maturity that is atypical for his age.
Although Park's character may be overshadowed by Eleanor's personality, he plays an essential role. From the beginning of the story to the end, we can see a clear evolution and maturity in this character.
Despite their differences, the two create a dependency on each other and complement each other perfectly. You can see how they face something they don't quite understand and how they turn it into a delicate, tender, pure, authentic relationship.

El libro de Rainbow Rowell cuenta la historia de dos jóvenes que viven en un barrio marginado. Por un lado, tenemos a Park. Un chico taciturno, con inquietudes culturales varias y apasionado por la música. Por otro, Eleanor, que llega nueva a un barrio donde lo primero que llama la atención es su aspecto característico. Un hecho cotidiano, como viajar en autobús, unirá a nuestros protagonistas, que crecerán y disfrutarán juntos de los cómics, los libros, la música y descubrirán el significado del primer amor puro, arrollador, verdadero y único.
La novela comienza con la llegada de Eleanor. Es la chica nueva, la chica diferente. Acaba de reunirse con su familia después de un año fuera y tiene que enfrentarse a una nueva vida, empezar de cero. Un nuevo colegio, un nuevo entorno y ningún amigo que le eche una mano.
Sin embargo, en cuanto sube al autobús, todo el mundo se fija en ella y en su peculiar aspecto, lo que la convierte en el blanco perfecto de los matones del colegio. El personaje de Eleanor tiene una personalidad arrolladora. Aunque a primera vista se nos presenta como una chica segura de sí misma, a la que no le importa lo que piensen los demás y que es capaz de plantar cara y enfrentarse a cualquier situación, cuando la conocemos un poco mejor descubrimos que no es la típica protagonista. Pero es una persona normal, como podríamos serlo cualquiera de nosotros, y eso, irónicamente, es lo que le hace especial. Tiene los mismos complejos e inseguridades que cualquier adolescente, los mismos miedos y preocupaciones, aunque quizás sí una madurez atípica para su edad.
Aunque el personaje de Park pueda quedar eclipsado por la personalidad de Eleanor, desempeña un papel esencial. Desde el principio de la historia hasta el final, podemos ver una clara evolución y madurez en este personaje.
A pesar de sus diferencias, ambos crean una dependencia mutua y se complementan a la perfección. Se puede ver cómo se enfrentan a algo que no acaban de entender y cómo lo convierten en una relación delicada, tierna, pura y auténtica.
