Hello everybody, dear community lover of good stories... I hope you are doing very well today reader friends, this time I want to share with you my review of: Remote Control, written by Nnedi Okorafor. This story is set in a futuristic Ghana, a story filled with themes of power, identity and loneliness, the main story follows Sankofa, a young girl with mysterious and extremely dangerous abilities who wanders from town to town searching for something she has lost and trying to understand her place in the world. Although the plot has science fiction elements, the novel also feels like a fable, this I found very interesting.

Among some aspects that I liked, is the way in which it manages to merge a story with a lot of advanced technology and traditional elements, in this story we will see drones, flying cars and very robotic technology... but there is also a strong sense of rural spaces with small towns and people living in a much simpler way, this mix creates a very interesting contrast that immersed me in the story from the first moment. The main character, Sankofa, is a young woman who carries a great deal of responsibility and power, although she herself does not fully understand it...

One of the things that struck me the most is how the duality of this character of Sankofa was conveyed, she is both feared and respected by others, her presence often causes death and fear around her. However, there are moments of great empathy and vulnerability in her character... this makes this protagonist not easily fit other traditional molds of hero or villain, which makes her a very human character and in my opinion also makes her much more complex.

The prose in this story is simple and even somewhat poetic, something I really appreciated in such a short book, even though it is just under 200 pages, every word seems carefully chosen to create an atmosphere that is both magical and realistic. The details, and the descriptions of Ghana and the places the protagonist visits really transport you into that technological and rural world. For example, there is a description of a wall covered in red dirt that evokes such a clear image that you can almost feel the texture of the environment... these kinds of details really appeal to me, they make me feel how these stories are really experienced and it feels like you are there with the characters. The story of Remote Control has a somewhat leisurely pace that pleasantly surprised me, despite its short length, this book takes its time to explore Sankofa's feelings and inner struggles.

This slower pace may not be for everyone, especially if you prefer more action and speed oriented reads, but I think it's perfect for those who enjoy really good characters that are deeply developed...I feel this gives a much more introspective feel. One of the themes that may come as a shock is how loneliness is addressed, throughout the story, we see the main character being incredibly isolated due to her powers. People fear her and she is often presented as an almost mythological figure, which makes her even more removed from any kind of human relationship.

I liked the addition of the fox who begins to follow the protagonist. It's nice to see how he seems immune to her abilities...all her loneliness combined with the responsibility of her power creates a deep sense of melancholy that runs through the entire narrative. I really liked how the theme of power and control was dealt with, we see how the protagonist possesses incredible power, but doesn't always have full control over it, which creates an interesting internal conflict. The author also explores the idea of how people in positions of power, be it Sankofa with her abilities or political figures with their influence, can affect the lives of others in unforeseen and sometimes very destructive ways. But well, like everything, I feel it also had its little hitches, and among the things that I feel didn't quite work, was that some elements of the story were left unexplained, particularly everything related to the origins and nature of our protagonist's powers.

While I understand that this is part of the mystery surrounding the plot, I would have liked a little more context or answers at the end. That said, it didn't negatively affect my overall reading experience, I think part of the charm of the book lies in what is left unsaid. This story is a mix of modern things with ancient things, the human with the supernatural. It has prose that I thought was beautifully written, although it is a somewhat short book, it is packed with moments that are sure to make you reflect on identity and purpose. I give it a good rating of 4.5/5 stars. If you like introspective stories and don't mind a more leisurely pace, I definitely recommend that you give this story a chance.... I hope you liked this review, I'll see you in the next ones, take care, bye bye.
