Hello all dear friends of Hive Book Club... this time I want to bring you all a new review. It is a romance novel written by Kate Canterbury and I really liked it, it is called: In a Jam... the story revolves around Shaylen, better known as Shay, who after being tragically abandoned at the altar, ends up inheriting a farm that was owned by her step-grandmother, with the condition that she must live in the small town for a year and get married in order to keep that inheritance. This premise is typical of romance novels, I think many of you will have seen the marriage of convenience plot and the classic return to a small town where the past and the present begin to mix.
Our protagonist returns to this town where she spent much of her adolescence and there she meets a boy, Noah, a former childhood friend who has gone from being a somewhat ugly and overweight young man.. to a really attractive and very confident man. Noah has been in love with Shay since they were very young and offers to marry her so that the conditions of the inheritance can be met, thus begins a Friends to Lovers story that while it has its sweet and funny moments, also feels a bit predictable. What I feel stands out most about this novel is its sense of humor...the author manages to keep a light tone throughout the story, but I personally felt that the reading was entertaining, at some points I genuinely laughed.
The witty dialogue and comical situations are one of the strongest points of the whole book...plus the relationship between the main characters, although somewhat awkward at first develops in a way that feels natural and the chemistry is endearing. Noah, despite being somewhat introverted, shows a confident side that adds a much spicier touch to the story, I found this interesting.
Hola a todos queridos amigos de Hive Book Club.. en esta ocasión les quiero traer a todos ustedes una nueva reseña. Se trata de una novela romántica escrita por Kate Canterbury y me gustó mucho la verdad, se llama: In a Jam.. la historia gira en torno a Shaylen, mejor conocida como Shay, quien después de ser abandonada en el altar trágicamente, termina heredando una granja que era propiedad de su abuelastra, con la condición de que debe vivir en el pequeño pueblo durante un año y casarse para poder conservar esa herencia. Esta premisa es típica de las novelas románticas, creo que muchos de ustedes habrán visto la trama del matrimonio por conveniencia y el clásico retorno a un pequeño pueblo donde el pasado y el presente se empiezan a mezclar..
Nuestra protagonista regresa a este pueblo donde pasó gran parte de su adolescencia y ahí se encuentra con un chico, Noah, un antiguo amigo de la infancia que ha pasado de ser un joven algo feo y con sobrepeso.. a un hombre realmente atractivo y muy seguro de sí mismo. Noah ha estado enamorado de Shay desde que eran muy jóvenes y le ofrece a ella casarse para que así se puedan cumplir las condiciones de la herencia, de esta manera comienza una historia de Friends to Lovers que aunque tiene sus momentos dulces y divertidos, también se siente un poco predecible. Lo que más siento que destaca de esta novela es su sentido del humor.. la autora logra mantener un tono ligero a lo largo de toda la historia, pero yo sentí personalmente que la lectura fue entretenida, en algunos momentos me reí genuinamente.
Los diálogos ingeniosos y las situaciones cómicas son uno de los puntos más fuertes de todo el libro... además la relación entre los protagonistas, aunque es algo torpe a un principio se desarrolla de una manera que se siente natural y la química resulta entrañable. Noah, a pesar de ser algo introvertido, muestra un lado seguro que añade un toque mucho más picante a la historia, esto me pareció interesante
However, despite some positive aspects that this novel has, it also has several points that I feel could be improved... to begin with, the length of the book is a bit excessive, with almost 500 pages... there are moments where the plot feels convoluted, especially towards the middle of the book, where I feel that the pace slows down considerably, I was forced to skip some things that I didn't really feel that they contributed much to the story. Also, some of the plots used I didn't feel like they added anything unique or particularly interesting, outside of simple clichés within romance stories...
I also feel that, in some respects, Noah's characterization throughout the novel can be interpreted in two ways: as that of a man in love and timid who finally finds all the courage to fight for the woman he loves, or as that of someone who has been waiting in the shadows, watching, until he finally gets the chance to claim something he believes is his. This personality nuance may make some readers feel a little uncomfortable, I think it depends on each person's interpretation or view of love, especially it feels a little strange the need to give a lot of relevance to the crush he has had on Shay for several years, something he never said anything about to her about.
It is also important to mention that the idealization of life in a small town is a recurring theme, but one that may be somewhat unnecessary in some pages, in my humble opinion, I feel that many people will identify with the use of the small town big hell narrative that the author tries to show.. obviously, I think every person has in their head the difficulties and challenges of living in isolated places. You don't need to be reminded so much of all these hindrances that exist for a person who is not used to it, I think obviously yes you can feel the love and sense of community in these towns, but the way they are approached sometimes doesn't feel realistic.
Sin embargo, a pesar de algunos aspectos positivos que tiene esta novela, también tiene varios puntos que considero yo que podrían mejorarse.. para empezar, la extensión del libro es un tanto excesiva, con casi 500 páginas.. hay momentos en los que la trama se siente enredada, especialmente hacia la mitad del libro, donde siento que el ritmo decae considerablemente, me ví en la obligación de saltarme algunas cosas que realmente no sentía que aportaran mucho a la historia. Además, algunas de las tramas utilizadas no sentí que aportaran algo único o particularmente interesante, fuera de simples clichés dentro de las historias románticas..
También siento que, en algunos aspectos, la caracterización de Noah a lo largo de la novela puede interpretarse de dos maneras: como la de un hombre enamorado y tímido que finalmente encuentra todo el valor para luchar por la mujer que ama, o como el de alguien que ha estado esperando en las sombras, observando, hasta que finalmente tiene la oportunidad de reclamar algo que él cree que es suyo. Este matiz de personalidad puede hacer que algunos lectores se sientan un poco incómodos, creo que depende de la interpretación o la visión del amor de cada persona,especialmente se siente algo extraño la necesidad de darle mucha relevancia al enamoramiento que tiene por Shay desde hace varios años, algo sobre lo que él nunca le dijo nada al respecto.
También es importante mencionar que la idealización de la vida en un pequeño pueblo es un tema recurrente, pero que puede resultar algo innecesario en algunas páginas, en mi humilde opinión, siento que muchas personas se sentirán identificadas con la utilización de la narrativa de pueblo pequeño infierno grande que la autora intenta mostrar.. obviamente, creo que cada persona tiene en su cabeza las dificultades y desafíos de vivir en lugares aislados. No es necesario recordarte tanto todas estas trabas que existen para una persona que no está acostumbrada, creo que obviamente sí se puede sentir el amor y el sentimiento de comunidad en estos pueblos, pero la manera en la que se abordan a veces no se siente realista.
Among other things I'd like to comment on is the character of Gennie, who is Noah's niece. Although she adds a tender element to the story, her behavior at times feels very forced, and like she's just there to generate laughs rather than to contribute in a real and meaningful way to the story.. also, the way her relationship with Shay is handled, as if the latter is an immediate mother figure, seemed unrealistic to me, especially considering how quickly this sort of relationship develops.. I think for me, the novel: In a Jam, although it has its flaws, is enjoyable if you are looking for a romantic read, and if these small town or farm ideas are your thing...
I think the moments of humor and chemistry between the main characters were appealing enough to make me finish the book... obviously this story would have benefited from a more rigorous editing or a better polish on the page count, but I think if you are a fan of contemporary romances and don't mind clichés, you can probably find a nice couple in this story that you will enjoy watching their love develop and develop. As I was saying to Friends to Lovers fans, you will surely like it. I personally give it a rating of 3.5/5.

If you like comedy, well you can give it a chance, I feel there are jokes that can make you genuinely laugh, or even if you live on a farm or know someone who lives on a farm, you can relate to it in a way. Entre otras cosas que me gustaría comentar es sobre el personaje de Gennie, quien es la sobrina de Noah. Aunque añade un elemento tierno a la historia, su comportamiento a veces se siente muy forzado, y como que está ahí nada más para generar risas que para contribuir de manera real y significativa a la historia.. además, la forma en la que se maneja su relación con Shay, como si esta última fuera una figura materna inmediata, me pareció poco realista, especialmente considerando la rapidez con la que se desarrolla esta especie de relación.. Creo que para mí, la novela: In a Jam, aunque tiene sus fallas, es disfrutable si buscas una lectura romántica, y si estas ideas de pueblitos o granjas son lo tuyo..
Creo que los momentos de humor y química entre los personajes principales fueron lo suficientemente atrayentes para hacerme terminar el libro.. obviamente esta historia se fuera beneficiado de una edición más rigurosa o una pulida mejor en la cantidad de páginas, pero pienso que si eres fanático de los romances contemporáneos y no te molestan los clichés, seguramente puedes encontrar en esta historia una pareja agradable de la cual disfrutes ver cómo se crea y desarrolla su amor. Como les decía a los fanáticos de los Friends to Lovers, seguramente les gusta. Yo personalmente le doy una calificación de 3.5/5.
