Hello to all reading lovers, dear Hive Book Club community. I hope you are well today... this time I want to share with you my thoughts on the book “Carrie Soto is Back” by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book took me by surprise in the best way... from the moment I read the synopsis, I knew I would find complex and compelling characters. The story revolves around Carrie Soto, a former tennis player who, after retiring due to injuries and the inevitable physical pressures that come with professional sports, decides to return to the courts at age 37 to defend her most cherished title: being the most titled player in tennis history.
What soon becomes abundantly clear in this book, however, is that it's not all about tennis. Sure, there are many descriptions of matches, and obviously they are really detailed, but what really stands out is the relationship of the protagonist with her father, I found this super interesting, although it is usually a recurring resource, I had never seen a representation like this... he is her lifelong coach, and you see how he helped her become the woman and the athlete she is. One of the most interesting points in this story is how the author approaches Carrie's personality... from the beginning you realize that she is not an easy character to like, she is extremely ambitious, stubborn and sometimes quite cold, but as you progress in the story you start to understand why her personality is like that, I think if we knew a person like that, we wouldn't like her haha, at least at first, without knowing anything about her..
Her devotion to tennis has shaped almost her entire life, and in many ways has isolated her from having a normal personal life.... She is so focused on winning, on being the best, that she has put aside other aspects of her life, such as her interpersonal relationships or even her own emotional well-being. She is a character who, while not always entirely sympathetic, is incredibly honest and real.

Espero se encuentren bien en el día de hoy.. en esta ocasión les quiero compartir mis opiniones sobre el libro "Carrie Soto is Back" de Taylor Jenkins Reid. Esta obra me tomó por sorpresa de la mejor manera.. desde que leí un poco la sinopsis, sabía que me encontraría con personajes complejos y atrapantes. La historia gira alrededor de Carrie Soto, una ex tenista que, después de retirarse debido a lesiones y la inevitable presión física que conlleva el deporte profesional, decide regresar a las canchas a sus 37 años para defender su título más preciado: ser la jugadora con más títulos en la historia del tenis.
Sin embargo, lo que pronto queda más que claro en este libro es que no todo es sobre tenis.. Claro, hay muchas descripciones de partidos, y obviamente son realmente detalladas, pero lo que realmente destaca es la relación de la protagonista con su padre, esto a mi me parecio super interesante, aunque suele ser un recurso recurrente, yo nunca había visto una representación así.. el es su entrenador de toda la vida, y se ve cómo este la ayudó a convertirse en la mujer y el atleta que es. Uno de los puntos más interesantes en esta historia es como la autora aborda la personalidad de Carrie.. desde el principio te das cuenta de que ella no es un personaje fácil de querer, es sumamente ambiciosa, terca y a veces bastante fría, pero a medida que avanzas en la historia comienzas a entender por qué su personalidad es así, creo que si conociéramos a una persona así, no nos agradaría..
Su devoción por el tenis ha moldeado casi toda su vida, y en muchos sentidos la ha aislado de tener una vida personal normal.. ella está tan enfocada en ganar, en ser la mejor, que ha dejado al lado otros aspectos de su vida, como sus relaciones interpersonales o incluso su propio bienestar emocional. Es un personaje que, aunque no siempre sea del todo simpático, es increíblemente honesto y real.
As I was saying, I didn't really like the main character's relationship with her father...throughout the pages I could see how this relationship was the backbone of her entire life. Her father, who was also a life-long promiser, has been her coach since she was a little girl, their bond is deep, but it is also full of tensions...especially when Carrie begins to question her desire to return to the courts is really hers or is it fulfilling expectations set by someone else...the way this dynamic is explored is touching and authentic, and is one of the aspects I liked most about the book. As for the writing, the author has a gift for making the characters feel alive, every dialogue, every description, immerses you deeply into the world of tennis and Carrie's life.
Although I found some of the descriptions of the matches unnecessarily long, I understand that for sports fans these scenes can be a very interesting addition to the story.... Personally, I'm not a super tennis fan, so at times I had a little trouble visualizing exactly in my mind what was going on, but that didn't detract from the overall experience. I would even say that those descriptions helped create a more intense atmosphere that served to make me imagine the protagonist more realistically.
Como les decía, no gustó mucho la relación de la protagonista con su padre.. a lo largo de las páginas pude ver cómo esta relación fue la columna vertebral de toda su vida. Su padre, quien también fue un prometedor de vida, ha sido su entrenador desde que era una pequeña niña, su vínculo es profundo, pero también está lleno de tensiones.. especialmente cuando Carrie comienza a cuestionarse su deseo de regresar a las canchas es realmente suyo o se está cumpliendo expectativas puestas por alguien más.. la manera en la que se explora esta dinámica es conmovedora y auténtica, y es uno de los aspectos que más me gustó del libro. En cuanto a la escritura, la autora tiene el don de hacer que los personajes se sientan vivos, cada diálogo, cada descripción, te sumerge profundamente en el mundo del tenis y en la vida de Carrie.
Aunque algunas descripciones de los partidos me parecieron innecesariamente largas, entiendo que para los fanáticos del deporte estas escenas pueden ser un plus muy interesante a la historia.. Personalmente, no soy un súper fan de tenis, así que a veces me costaba un poco visualizar exactamente en mi mente lo que estaba pasando, pero eso no le quitó el mérito a la experiencia en general. Incluso diría que esas descripciones ayudaron a crear una atmósfera más intensa que servía para imaginarme a la protagonista de forma más real.
Another interesting theme is how the story covers topics such as sexism in sports, the pressure on women to stay on top, and how all these women who are ambitious and successful are perceived in a world dominated by mostly famous male athletes. Carrie is not afraid to be called difficult or selfish, and on several occasions she stands out as much as a man would. Probably, the public perception for her, would be different if she, instead of being a woman, were a man. This feminist approach is something that, in my opinion, gives the book a lot of strength and makes it very relevant. In the end, this story is not only about an athlete trying to recapture her past glory, but it is also a reflection on sacrifice, on what it means to succeed, and on the costs that come with all these things. It's a story about accepting both our own limits, and the losses that life will inevitably bring....
It's a story I really enjoyed, and while some of the tennis-related parts were a bit technical for my taste, the character development and human relationships made the whole journey worthwhile. I give it a strong 4.5/5 rating. If you like strong, complex, nuanced character stories, this is certainly the book for you. I think it can teach both men and women a lot... Otro tema interesante es cómo la historia abarca temas como el machismo en el deporte, la presión sobre las mujeres para mantenerse en la cima, y cómo se percibe a todas estas mujeres que son ambiciosas y exitosas en un mundo dominado por mayormente famosos atletas hombres. Carrie no tiene miedo a ser llamada difícil o egoísta, y en varias ocasiones se destaca tanto como lo haría un hombre. Probablemente, la percepción pública para ella, sería distinta si ella, en vez de ser mujer, fuera un hombre. Este enfoque feminista es algo que, en mi opinión, le da mucha fuerza al libro y lo hace muy relevante. Al final, esta historia no es solo sobre una deportista que intenta recuperar su gloria pasada, sino que también es una reflexión sobre el sacrificio, sobre lo que significa tener éxito, y sobre los costos que vienen con todas estas cosas.
Es una historia sobre la aceptación tanto de nuestros propios límites, como de las pérdidas que la vida inevitablemente nos traerá.. Es una historia que disfruté mucho, y aunque algunas partes relacionadas con el tenis fueron un poco técnicas para mi gusto, el desarrollo de personajes y las relaciones humanas hicieron que todo el viaje valiera la pena. Le doy una fuerte calificación de 4.5/5. Si te gustan las historias de personajes fuertes, complejos y llenos de matices, este sin duda es el libro para ti. Creo que puede enseñarnos muchas tanto a hombres como a mujeres.. Espero que le den una oportunidad.. nos veremos en las próximas reseñas. Gracias por leerme. Bye bye.
