Otra casualidad del destino, fue cuando estaba ayudando a desempacar los libros de la biblioteca de mi mamá y me encuentro con El alma de las manos. Me dio curiosidad ya que es un libro nuevo en su colección y empecé a preguntarle sobre ¿cómo lo adquirió?. En ese momento el libro se abre justamente en la página que estaba el bello tejido de un aro igual al que tenemos ahora en el jardín.
It grabbed me and I had to read it. While I was devouring its pages I realized that it is a documentary book where he points out the basket weaving art of the indigenous peoples of Venezuela.
Me atrapó y tuve que leerlo. Mientras devoraba sus páginas me di cuenta que es un libro documental donde señala el arte cestero de los pueblos indígenas de Venezuela.
Through beautiful photographs that Marie-Claude shows us, we can learn about the process of collecting raw materials, the selection of materials, the way in which the fibers are dyed and how weaving has evolved from one culture to another over time. Undoubtedly, this book is a jewel of Venezuelan culture that I loved from the beginning where the author highlights how wonderful it is to try to understand the fusion between the mind and the hands of the artisan.
Mediante bellas fotografías que nos enseña Marie- Claude podemos conocer el proceso de recolección de materia prima, la selección de los materiales, la forma en que se tiñen las fibras y cómo ha evolucionado el tejido de una cultura a otra a lo largo del tiempo. Sin duda, este libro es una joya de la cultura venezolana que me encantó desde el principio donde la autora resalta lo maravilloso que es tratar de entender la fusión entre la mente y las manos del artesano.
Investigating about the cesta-bandeja that we have at home, the book teaches us that it is a fabric of Itiriti fiber that is considered as the celestial reed by the indigenous people of Venezuela. Some mythological legends are attributed to this material obtained from nature:
"It is said that the owner of the Itiriti is **Amana**, the Anaconda-Coral spirit that lives in the swampy lagoons where the reed grows".
Investigando sobre la cesta-bandeja que tenemos en casa, en el libro nos enseñan que es un tejido de fibra de Itiriti que es considerado como el junco celestial por los pueblos indígenas de Venezuela. Se le atribuyen a este material que obtienen de la naturaleza, algunas leyendas mitológicas:
"Se dice que el dueño del Itiriti es **Amana**, el espíritu Anaconda-Coral que vive en las lagunas pantanosas donde crece el junco".
Personally I am a lover of handicrafts. A few years ago I bought in Caracas a hammock or chinchorro of moriche from an indigenous woman of the Arawak people. This beautiful fabric is also specified in the book, where it is pointed out that the moriche palms are found on the banks of the Orinoco.

The book El alma de las manos, was published in 2009 by the publisher arte. I feel fortunate to have at home one of the 1500 copies that highlight the beauty of the indigenous weaving of my country, especially the waja tomenatto or painted circular tray. My recommendation is to support the indigenous art and contribute acquiring these beautiful decorative pieces for us and with mythological meaning for the tribes, in this way the ancestral traditions are not lost for lack of support and we can continue enjoying this wonderful art.
El libro El alma de las manos, fue publicado en el 2009 por el editorial arte. Me siento afortunada de tener en casa una de los 1500 ejemplares que resaltan la belleza del tejido indigena de mi país, especialmente de las waja tomenatto o bandeja circular pintada. Mi recomendación es apoyar el arte indigena y contribuir adquiriendo estas hermosas piezas decorativas para nosotros y con significado mitológico para las tribus, de esta manera las tradiciones ancestrales no se pierden por falta de apoyo y podemos seguir disfrutando de este maravilloso arte.
