In the marshes, near the town of Barkley Cove, lives little Kya Clark with her loved ones. In 1952, the problems of a dysfunctional family cause them to leave the marshland in time to disconnect from their past and start a new life. After a few years, Kya is left completely on her own. Various, sometimes frightening, legends begin to circulate about the wetlands and Kya becomes a social outcast nicknamed 'The Girl from Marshes' by the residents of Barkley Cove. In 1969, a young man, Chase Andrews, is murdered in the marshlands and the main suspicion falls on Kya.
This book tackles a number of themes new to me that I have not encountered before in my reading. One of these is the girl's constant loneliness. From an early age, she experienced abandonment - first by her mother and then gradually by her four siblings. At just a few years old, Kya understood that the reason for the break-up of her family was her father's addiction and abusive behavior, but she could not understand why she was the only one left in their old house and no one helped her. This is one of the unpleasant themes presented in this book. Admittedly, there are some helpful characters later on, such as a friend of the girl's brother and the shopkeeper of the shop Kya goes to. However, before that, it is sad how abandoned and traumatized girl tries to find a way to get food.
There is also a theme in 'Where the Crawdads Sing' that I really liked. It is about the bond between human and nature. The book contains very elaborate, even poetic descriptions of nature with special attention to detail. There are some beautiful metaphors that I would never have come across in my life. The swamp and its inhabitants - whether fish, birds or insects - became Kya's new home and company when she was lonely.
There also remains the mystery of Chase's murder. The novel's plot interweaves events from Kya's youth and the 1969 trial. More and more witnesses and evidence in the murder case emerge, keeping the reader engaged until the very end.
I highly recommend 'Where the Crawdads Sing' by Delia Owens. It is a book that is on the one hand humble, simple, and sad, and on the other hand laced with sensual descriptions and beautifully presented main character development. The book also received its own film adaptation, which is also worth watching!

Na mokradłach, w okolicach miasteczka Barkley Cove, mieszka mała Kya Clark ze swoimi najbliższymi. W 1952 roku problemy dysfunkcyjnej rodziny sprawiają, że z czasem jej członkowie opuszczają bagna w celu odcięcia się od przeszłości i rozpoczęcia nowego życia. Po kilku latach Kya zostaje zdana całkowicie na siebie. O mokradłach zaczynają krążyć różne, czasami straszne legendy, a Kya staje się wyrzutkiem społecznym nazywanym przez mieszkańców Barkley Cove "Dziewczyną z Bagien". W 1969 roku na terenie mokradeł dochodzi do zabójstwa młodego mężczyzny Chase'a Andrews'a, a główne podejrzenia padają na Kyę.
Ta książka podejmuje wiele nowych dla mnie tematów, z którymi nie spotkałam się wcześniej w lekturach. Jednym z nich jest nieustannie doskwierająca dziewczynie samotność. Już od najmłodszych lat doświadczała opuszczenia - najpierw przez matkę, a następnie stopniowo przez czwórkę rodzeństwa. Mając zaledwie kilka lat Kya rozumiała, że powodem rozpadu jej rodziny było uzależnienie i agresywne zachowania ze strony ojca, jednak nie mogła pojąć, dlaczego ona, jako jedyna została w ich starym domu i nikt jej nie pomógł. To jeden z tych przykrych tematów przedstawionych w tej książce. Co prawda, później pojawia się kilka pomocnych postaci, takich jak przyjaciel brata dziewczyny, czy sprzedawcy sklepu, do którego chodzi Kya. Jednakże wcześniej przykre jest to, jak porzucona i straumatyzowana próbuje znaleźć sposób na zdobycie jedzenia.
W "Gdzie śpiewają raki" pojawia się też wątek, który bardzo mi się spodobał. Chodzi o więź człowieka z naturą. Książka zawiera bardzo rozbudowane, wręcz poetyckie opisy przyrody ze szczególną dbałością o detale. Pojawiają się tam piękne metafory, na które nigdy w życiu bym nie wpadła. Bagno i jego mieszkańcy - ryby, ptaki, czy owady stały się dla Kyi nowym domem i towarzystwem, gdy była samotna.
Pozostaje też zagadka zabójstwa Chase'a. Akcja powieści przeplata się wydarzeniami z młodości Kyi i procesem sądowym z 1969 roku. Pojawia się coraz więcej świadków i dowodów w sprawie morderstwa, co sprawia, że czytelnik pozostaje zaangażowany aż do samego końca.
Bardzo polecam "Gdzie śpiewają raki" Delii Owens. Jest to książka z jednej strony skromna, prosta, smutna, a z drugiej usłana zmysłowymi opisami i pięknie przedstawionym rozwojem głównej postaci. Doczekała się ona także swojej ekranizacji, którą również warto obejrzeć!
