y ellos allí afuera, el mismo silencio,
porque siempre estuvieron allí,
y nosotros junto a ellos,

the lips reddened from kissing worms,
the cut husks,
and nothing behind,
just another stupid sunset,
the petals opening, the dark eyes,
we knew everything, we knew it all like white dogs,
our rabid hemlock tongues,
and the garbage all around,
blooming because the heat was spreading from our bodies,
we knew it pale, the same night all of a sudden,
and them out there, the same silence,
because they were always there,
and us next to them,
listening to stories, nodding,
sleeping on the scorched earth or on the mud,
fetidly, in the wreckage,
under a plastic sheet shattered by the sun
or in rags among the March flies,
then words were splinters under the tongue,
we had prepared in silence,
the benteveos perched on the reeds,
the scarecrows smiling under an inconceivable sun,
we were the things that hurt,
