REFLECTION HUNTERS CONTEST ENTRY – BLUE ILLUSION

REFLECTION HUNTERS CONTEST ENTRY – BLUE ILLUSION

These are reflection photos I took of an unusual sculpture placed in front of a condominium building. There are two separate buildings, on opposite street corners. Each building has a similar painted metal sculpture. One sculpture has red spaghetti-like vertical projections and the other has blue horizontal projections. I’ve found the blue one to be rather hazardous to navigate due to its positioning. If not paying attention, it’s easy to run into it and injure oneself! I’ve always found these sculptures odd and the blue one to be on the dangerous side.

There are small random sections of red, blue, and yellow rectangles in between some of the black vertical and horizontal lines of each building. It brings to mind paintings by Piet Mondrian. The red and blue sculptures repeat these colours. Oddly, there is a third condominium building without the coloured rectangles and without a sculpture. I’ve wondered why the third one has been left undecorated. I imagine it with the third “missing” sculpture, in yellow to complete the set of three.

The reflection photo with the car in the same blue colour as that of the sculpture was luck of timing. The car stopped in front of traffic lights while I was in the middle of the street (on a narrow concrete island) trying to photograph the reflection of the sculpture. I saw it through the camera lens and had to move quickly to capture it and it’s spikiness before it drove off in a puff of blue illusion.
