entry sh 177 titled: secondhand shadows

while my wife was in the second hand shop i was out shadow hunting.
the shop had been closed as part of the local effort to curb the spreading of covid. when it reopened they had made a new separate section for outdoor furniture. while there were plenty of people in the shop there wasn't anybody in this part probably because it was not easy to notice from the entrance. but since i was shadow hunting instead of shopping...

it was under a roof in a fenced off area with the sun shining through the fence making it a perfect setup for a shadow session. it's an informal place and since i was all alone nobody seemed to mind in the least that i rearranged the furniture.

it was too tempting to resist putting the different chairs in positions to make the best photos like this one above.

the fabric of the chair nearest me was loosely woven giving the lighting on it an interesting unexpected effect. curiously some but not all parts of both the back and the seat fabric are transparent. looking through the back of the chair reveals a curious inexplicable detail. if i only knew myself how it was caused it may have shown up in a guess the shadow contest. any guesses?

of course the chair breaks up the pattern of stripes formed by the fence boards on the asphalt surface. but can you find the single stripe of light which lines up perfectly undisturbed by chaise longue. by the way chaise longue is a french term meaning long chair. it got americanized to chaise lounge, perhaps unintentionally.

compare how little the chair distorts the shadow of the vertical fence boards with how much it distorts the horizontal one.
