This place has seemed enigmatic to me since the first time I saw it, not only because of its facade full of symbols, but also because of what is behind it.
Este lugar me ha parecido enigmático desde la primera vez que lo vi, no sólo por su fachada llena de símbolos, sino también por lo que hay detrás de ella.
It's true that I couldn't go through its door, but by researching the building, I was able to enter it in another way, through information. Freemasonry originated in Great Britain during the Middle Ages (early 18th century), where Freemasons mastered the art of building cathedrals and taught their secrets in confraternities called lodges. People with Renaissance ideas and critical of the Catholicism that dominated, joined together and eventually formed The Grand Lodge of London (1717), whose constitution establishes the secular and rationalist character of the institution.
Es cierto que no pude atravesar su puerta, pero investigando sobre la edificación, pude entrar a ella de otra manera, a través de la información. La masonería se originó en Gran Bretaña durante la Edad Media (principios del siglo XVIII), allí los francmasones dominaban el arte de la construcción de catedrales y enseñaban sus secretos en cofradías que llamaban logias. Personas con ideas renacentistas y críticas del catolicismo que dominaba, se unieron y con el tiempo formaron La Gran Logia de Londres (1717), cuya constitución establece el carácter laico y racionalista de la institución.
The one you see in the photos is the Victoria Lodge N° 9, a Masonic temple founded on April 15, 1854 by General Santiago Mariño. It is located in La Victoria, Aragua State (Venezuela), and is the oldest in this region of the country.
La que ven en las fotos es la Logia Victoria N° 9, un templo masónico fundado el 15 de abril de 1854 por el General Santiago Mariño. Está ubicada en La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela), y es la más antigua de esta región del país.
I had certain notions about Freemasonry, but writing this article broadened my knowledge. To begin with, it is not a religion as many might think, within its Declaration of Principles it is defined as “a universal institution, essentially ethical, philosophical and initiatory, whose fundamental structure is constituted by an educational, traditional and symbolic system. It is entered through initiation. Founded on the feeling of Fraternity, it constitutes the center of union for men of free spirit of all races, nationalities and creeds”.
Tenía ciertas nociones sobre la masonería, pero al escribir este artículo mis conocimientos se ampliaron. Para empezar, no es una religión como muchos podrían pensar, dentro de su Declaración de Principios se define como "una institución universal, esencialmente ética, filosófica e iniciática, cuya estructura fundamental la constituye un sistema educativo, tradicional y simbólico. Se ingresa a ella por medio de la Iniciación. Fundada en el sentimiento de la Fraternidad, constituye el centro de unión para los hombres de espíritu libre de todas las razas, nacionalidades y credos".
The day I took these photos I was lucky enough to find the gate of the lodge open, from inside I could hear the sound of a piano. I was about to knock on the door to see if I could visit inside, but then I didn't dare, so I continued there at the entrance capturing the details of the facade. Apart from the shape of the columns and the combination of colors where the gold stands out, for me the most striking thing is the letters and symbols that are placed there.
El día que tomé estas fotos tuve la suerte de encontrar la reja de la logia abierta, desde el interior se escuchaba el sonido de un piano. Estuve a punto de tocar la puerta a ver si podía visitar su interior, pero luego no me atreví, así que continué allí en la entrada capturando los detalles de la fachada. Aparte de la forma de las columnas y la combinación de colores donde el dorado resalta, para mí lo más llamativo son las letras y símbolos que están puestos ahí.
On the upper part of the facade of the temple are the initials A.L.G.G.D.G.A.D.U., which stand for A La Gloria Del Gran Arquitecto Del Universo (To The Glory Of The Great Architect Of The Universe), and below these S.F.U.: Salud, Fuerza y Unión (Health, Strength and Union), all separated by three dots, which are like a signature of the Masons.
En la parte superior de la fachada del templo figuran las iniciales A.L.G.D.G.A.D.U., que significan A La Gloria Del Gran Arquitecto Del Universo, y debajo de estas S.F.U.: Salud, Fuerza y Unión, todas separadas por tres puntos, que son como una firma de los masones.
In Freemasonry, the expression “The Great Architect of the Universe” or G.A.O.T.U., is used as an allegory to designate a creator or omnipotent principle, which for many is God.
This principle allows everyone to name and interpret their deity as they wish and also gives them the freedom to profess whatever faith they wish.
En la masonería, la expresión “El Gran Arquitecto del Universo” o G.A.D.U., se utiliza como alegoría para designar un principio creador u omnipotente, que para muchos es Dios.
“Existen más de 5000 dioses venerados alrededor de todo el mundo, pero no te preocupes, sólo el tuyo es el verdadero y en la Masonería lo llamamos G.A.D.U.”
Este principio permite a cada quien nombrar e interpretar a su deidad como quiera y también le da la libertad de profesar la fe que desee.
Other symbols that are on the facade, below the letters, are the square and the compass with the letter G (Geometry) in the middle, these are the best known symbols of Freemasonry. The square represents straightness and the compass the limit, together they form a balance for the symbolic construction of people, using intelligence and reason in the search for wisdom and truth.
Otros símbolos que están en la fachada, debajo de las letras, son la escuadra y el compás con la letra G (Geometría) en el medio, estos son los símbolos más conocidos de la masonería. La escuadra representa la rectitud y el compás el límite, juntos forman un equilibrio para la construcción simbólica de las personas, utilizando la inteligencia y la razón en la búsqueda hacia la sabiduría y la verdad.
One of the objectives of this philosophical and philanthropic movement is that humanity improves materially and morally. Through study it seeks solutions to the problems of life and thus ensure that there is justice, peace and fraternity among individuals and peoples, regardless of religion, nationality or social status.
Uno de los objetivos de este movimiento filosófico y filantrópico es que la humanidad mejore material y moralmente. A través del estudio busca soluciones a los problemas de la vida y conseguir así que haya justicia, paz y fraternidad entre las personas y los pueblos, independientemente de su religión, nacionalidad o condición social.
Going back to the details in the building of the Victoria Lodge No. 9, its construction was given thanks to donations and contributions from members, and was completed in 1881. It has two pillars on the facade, this design of the columns is a replica of the entrance to the Temple of King Solomon.
Volviendo a los detalles en la edificación de la Logia Victoria Nº 9, su construcción se dio gracias a las donaciones y contribuciones de los miembros, y fue culminada en 1881. Tiene dos pilares en la fachada, este diseño de las columnas es una réplica de la entrada al Templo del Rey Salomón.
Two busts also stand out in the portico, works of the Venezuelan artist Pedro Básalo (1885-1948), placed there in the XX century. One is of the Roman goddess Minerva and the other of the Liberator Simón Bolívar.
Destacan también dos bustos en el pórtico, obras del artista venezolano Pedro Básalo (1885-1948), colocadas allí en el siglo XX. Uno es de la diosa romana Minerva y el otro del Libertador Simón Bolívar.
According to information from a research I found on Masonic temples in Venezuela, this lodge was built with traditional materials of the time, such as stone masonry and clay bricks with a common rigging. Its main door is of cedar wood, two wings supported by cast iron hinges and bronze pins, and the entrance grille is of wrought iron.
Según información de una investigación que encontré sobre templos masónicos en Venezuela, esta logia fue construida con materiales tradicionales de la época, como mampostería de piedra y ladrillos de arcilla con un aparejo común. Su puerta principal es de madera de cedro, dos alas sostenidas por bisagras de hierro fundido y clavijas de bronce, y la reja de la entrada es de hierro forjado.
The Victoria Lodge No. 9 is a Municipal Historic Monument and is still active. If at some point I have the opportunity to visit its interior, I will make another post to show it and explain the distribution of the spaces and the meaning they have.
La Logia Victoria Nº 9 es Monumento Histórico Municipal y continúa activa, si en algún momento tengo la oportunidad de conocer su interior, haré otra publicación para mostrarlo y explicar la distribución de los espacios y el significado que tienen.
According to data from the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Venezuela, there are 169 lodges in the country with approximately 5,000 members. The origins of the initiatory order in these lands date back to the end of the 18th century and Francisco de Miranda, precursor of Venezuela's Independence, is considered the Father of Latin American Freemasonry. Other important historical figures such as Simón Bolívar or José Félix Ribas, were also Masons.
En el país, según datos de La Gran Logia de la República de Venezuela, existen 169 logias con aproximadamente 5.000 miembros. Los orígenes de la orden iniciática en estas tierras se remontan a finales del siglo XVIII y Francisco de Miranda, precursor de la Independencia de Venezuela, es considerado como el Padre de la Masonería Latinoamericana. Otras importantes figuras de la historia como Simón Bolívar o José Félix Ribas, también fueron masones.
