Last Friday I went out near home to do some shopping. I went to a warehouse that is in front of the Plaza Bolívar of the town where I currently live, Valle de la Pascua, Guárico state, in Venezuela; and since I am Catholic, I took advantage of the moment to go to the Cathedral, pray a little and connect with the energy of this sacred place, since I have not attended mass for a long time, since since the pandemic I refrained from attending religious services, and even today I have not resumed this habit. And since I was in the Cathedral, I requested permission to take some photos, which I wanted to share with all of you today.
El viernes pasado salí cerca de casa a hacer unas compras. Acudí a un almacén que queda al frente de la Plaza Bolívar del pueblo en el que habito actualmente, Valle de la Pascua, estado Guárico, en Venezuela; y ya que soy católica, aproveché el momento para acercarme a la Catedral, rezar un poco y conectarme con la energía de este sagrado lugar, pues tengo mucho tiempo que no asisto a misa, ya que desde la pandemia me abstuve de asistir a los servicios religiosos, y aún hoy no he retomado este hábito. Y ya que estaba en la Catedral, solicité permiso para tomar algunas fotos, las cuales he querido compartir con todos ustedes hoy.
The Cathedral “Our Lady of La Candelaria” is located on the corner of Atarraya Street and Guasco Street, in front of Plaza Bolívar, in Valle de la Pascua. It is a beautiful and imposing building, which has undergone various modifications since its construction. As I was able to investigate (see the reference at the end of the post), the current building was built in 1955, replacing the previous temple that was French style, and here I will say that it was possibly Gothic, so it must have been a very beautiful church as well. It's a shame that I didn't find any old photos, prior to the reconstruction of this Cathedral.
La Catedral “Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria”, se encuentra ubicada en la esquina de la calle Atarraya cruce con la Calle Guasco, enfrente de la Plaza Bolívar, de Valle de la Pascua. Es una edificación bonita e imponente, que ha sufrido diversas modificaciones desde su construcción. Según pude investigar (ver la referencia al final del post), la edificación actual fue hecha en 1955, sustituyendo el templo anterior que era de estilo afrancesado, y aquí diré que posiblemente era gótico, por lo que debe haber sido una iglesia muy bella también, lástima que no encontré ninguna foto antigua, previa a la reconstrucción de esta Catedral.
According to this source consulted (Hernández, 2015), the current style of this temple is Baroque, which is evident in the volume of the building, the use of domes, vaults, columns and ornaments in general. If we look at the front, we will see three doors, one central and two side doors. We also see a central religious image, and a metal cross also in the center.
De acuerdo a esta fuente consultada (Hernández, 2015), el estilo actual de este templo es Barroco, lo que se evidencia en el volumen de la edificación, el uso de las cúpulas, bóvedas, columnas y los ornamentos en general. Si observamos al frente, veremos tres puertas, una central y dos laterales. También observamos una imagen religiosa central, y una cruz metálica también en el centro.
This Cathedral has a working clock, which marks the time precisely with chimes. Let me explain: At 6:00 a.m. 6 chimes sound followed by a religious melody to start the day, it could be a Christmas carol (in the month of December those were the melodies that were played), or a religious hymn. At 6:15 a.m. A bell rings, then at 6:30 a.m. two bells, at 6:45 a.m., 3 bells are heard, and at 7:00 a.m. 7 bells will ring; and so on throughout the day. At 12:00 m. A very cheerful melody is heard, announcing the middle of the day, and at 5:30 p.m. Many bells are heard calling for mass. I know this because I live very close to the Cathedral and I can hear them easily.
Esta Catedral tiene un reloj que está en funcionamiento, que marca la hora de forma precisa con campanadas. Me explico: A las 6:00 a.m. el suenan 6 campanadas seguidas de una melodía religiosa para iniciar el día, puede ser un villancico (en el mes de Diciembre esas eran las melodías que sonaban), o un himno religioso. A las 6:15 a.m. suena una campanada, luego, a las 6:30 a.m. dos campanadas, a las 6:45 a.m., se oyen 3 campanadas, y a las 7:00 a.m. sonarán 7 campanadas; y así a lo largo del día. A las 12:00 m. se oye una melodía muy alegre, anunciando la mitad del día, y a las 5:30 p.m. se oyen muchas campanadas de llamada a misa. Esto lo sé porque vivo muy cerca de la Catedral y puedo oírlas fácilmente.
Upon entering the interior, I noticed that the light decreased noticeably, even though it was almost noon, and this is because there was only one door open, hence the photos are not completely clear. It is a building with a very high ceiling, beautiful marble columns, granite floor, the interior is very cool. In the background we can see the central altar where the priest officiates the mass, while, on the opposite side, there is a second floor, all made of wood, with some religious images. The benches to receive the parishioners are all made of wood and are very well preserved. I am always impressed when I see the thick and huge columns, they are jewels.
Al ingresar al interior, noté que la luz disminuía notablemente, aún cuando era casi mediodía, y esto es debido a que sólo había una puerta abierta, de allí que las fotos no sean del todo nítidas. Es una edificación con un techo muy alto, hermosas columnas de mármol, piso de granito, el interior es muy fresco. Al fondo podemos ver el altar central en donde el sacerdote oficia la misa, mientras que, en el lado opuesto, hay un segundo piso, todo de madera, con algunas imágenes religiosas. Los bancos para recibir a la feligresía, son todos de madera, están muy bien conservados. Siempre me impresiona ver las gruesas y enormes columnas, son unas joyas.
The colorful stained glass windows, are other beautiful decorative elements. Unfortunately I was only able to take a good quality photo of one of the windows, but there are plenty of them. The confessionals are also beautiful, made of wood. Upon entering I could see two: One on the left and one on the right. It is also very notable the number of religious images that are from side to side of the Cathedral, as well as attached to the walls.
Los coloridos vitrales en las ventanas, son otros elementos decorativos preciosos. Lamentablemente sólo pude tomar una foto de buena calidad de una de las ventanas, pero hay gran cantidad de ellos. También los confesionarios son hermosos, hechos en madera. Al ingresar pude observar dos: Uno a la izquierda y otro a la derecha. También es muy notable la cantidad de imágenes religiosas que hay de lado a lado de la Catedral, así como adosadas a las paredes.
As I approach the central altar there is the commemorative plaque, placed in 1999, when this temple was consecrated as a Cathedral. There is also the baptismal or holy water font. There is also the inn where the priest officiates mass, and the seats where he, the deacons and altar boys occupy during religious services. Likewise, on each side of the central altar, I could see a Nativity (left side), and a Christmas tree (right side), both very beautiful. In the background of the Nativity there is the image of the Virgin of La Candelaria, the Patron Saint of this town and which gives its name to this Cathedral.
Al acercarme al altar central está la placa conmemorativa, colocada en el año 1999, cuando este templo fue consagrado como Catedral. También está la pila bautismal o de agua bendita. También están el mesón en donde el párroco oficia la misa, y los asientos en que éste, los diáconos y monaguillos ocupan durante los servicios religiosos. Asimismo, a cada lado del altar central, pude observar una Natividad (lado izquierdo), y un arbolito de Navidad (lado derecho), ambos muy hermosos. Al fondo de la Natividad está la imagen de la Virgen de La Candelaria, la Santa Patrona de este pueblo y la cual le da nombre a esta Catedral.
