My Personal Office Space

People who are workaholics, often seek a personal space for work. Most prefer to finish their work at the office because nobody wants to keep the work pressure with them when they are at home. But I have seen many clients who wanted personal workspaces or workstations at home for themselves. Some preferred the study room concept, some had wanted just an arrangement with a table, chair, and some drawers. I often noticed that clients wanted a study zone for their kids when it comes to design a childbed. I understand because it's mandatory when you have kids at home. They need a personal zone for study. But what about professional people? What do they want? They work in the office but after that is it really necessary to create a personal office space at home? Do they need a study room for themselves? It varies from client to client. As I said, some wanted to have a separate study room and some don't.

But this COVID19 scenario changed everyone's perspective. People have started working from home due to the lockdown situation. And now somehow I feel it is mandatory to have a personal workstation at home. Freelancers and creative designers always seek for personal work station/space, they need this space for their work. Freelancers mostly work from home so a personal office space is mandatory for them. I feel creative works never stops, as an architect I used to do work at home after my job. Sometimes I used to do office work from home during the weekend as well because there is a term called "submission date" or "last date" that pushed me to work from home as well.

My own personal Project - Client: Vorer Kagoj, Shamol Dutt...

When it comes to design a personal office space design at the office for myself, the first thing that comes to my mind is this type of zone. A nice room space with adequate furniture, designed false ceiling, paneling, cabinets, and a designed large table for myself. An elegant self-workstation where I can do meetings with clients as well. A space for the computer, a blackboard to keep the track of work schedules, a large table for paperwork, drawings, a shelf for books and cabinets. This design was done by me for a client and his demand was the wooden texture and blue sofa (existing). I would have changed the color of the wood and instead I would prefer monochromic colors. Anyway, this design is not applicable for homes, this design is applicable for offices.

So what are my preferences for My Personal Office Space:

If you ask me how I feel to work from home, I would say chaotic. I often prefer a calm, quiet place for myself for my work otherwise it's easy to get distracted. I can't concentrate when surrounding is chaotic. I believe personal office space at home should be simple and natural lighting is mandatory where you can work with full concentration. A space that is separated from the public or semi-public zone of a house and mostly close to the private zone. A space that is not only comfortable but also will help you to focus on your work. It can be the corner of a room...

Lighting:

When it comes to design a personal office space, my first and foremost criteria is "lighting". I prefer natural lighting more than artificial lighting but of course, for nighttime work, artificial lighting is a must. Natural lighting source effects on mind and body and helps to boost energy level. Proper lighting will help you to work for a long time. Imagine, if you are working in a dark space, how would you feel? But obviously, darkness is a personal preference, and some individuals love to work from dark places.

Color Combination, Ambience:

Colors always make the differences and it is mandatory to choose a proper color combination when it comes to design a room or space. I prefer monochrome color always, soft reflective tones but sometimes for creating contrast and harmony, I go for colorful tones for one surface. My preference is a combination of neutral colors, perhaps, one surface can be cool-toned. I want to create such an ambient from my own imagination where silence exists and I can concentrate on my work.

Material and Furniture Selection:

It is very important to understand what type of zone you wanna create for your personal office space. You can go for funky, colorful or you might choose a simple concept like me with simple furniture. I feel minimalism is the best solution if there is a scarcity of providing enough space for personal workspace. Of course, budget is also important as well. The first one, the above picture, shows a concept of the study room and the second one is just a small idea. I prefer the combination of these two examples. Architects need a large table because they need drawing space too. Also, some having shelves are important but not mandatory but I feel drawers are mandatory.

I prefer a large grey wooden texture table with drawers and shelves for my laptop/desktop and drawings. Because I wanna keep my table clean though I know it's not possible. When I do designs, the entire zone becomes messy. I want something simple and functional but it will also look elegant. Drawers are needed for keeping all drawing tools and shelves are necessary for books. I also want a blackboard hanging on the wall to pin up my pending work schedule.

Decorations & Others:

I don't mind having some plants and candles in my personal workspace. Plants always help to clean the environment and provides a natural ambient. I prefer plants always for my home so why not in my personal office space right? I also prefer to keep my favorite aromatic candles just to change my mood. Design works are always stressful so these small elements will help me to change my mood for a while and will help me to reduce my stress a bit.

These are my overall ideas and concept when I will design my own personal space. Simple and energetic space as well as semi-formal. I don't want too much for my personal office spaces because I believe too many elements often create distractions. A comfortable cozy place is always preferable and I want such a place where I can work comfortably. A place that will increase my energy without any disturbance...

If necessary, I can attend a zoom meeting from such a place. I feel this type of flexible working space idea will help me to complete various types of tasks as well.

This is my overall idea, obviously, the design might be different from the examples and case studies...
