| Dear friends, today I want to show you a rather interesting building - it used to be a water tower and has an unusual shape. It meets us at the entrance to the town of Kohtla Järve, which is in the north-east of Estonia. The condition of the tower is now rather poor despite the fact that it is considered as a landmark and one of the symbols of the town. Why it is a symbol and why it is now in a wretched state, I will try to explain. | Дорогие друзья, сегодня хочу показать вам довольно интересное строение - раньше оно было водонапорной башней и имеет необычную форму. Оно встречает нас у въезда в город Кохтла Ярве, что на северо-востоке Эстонии. Состояние башни сейчас довольно плачевное, несмотря на то, что она считается достопримечательностью и одним из символов города. Почему это символ и почему он сейчас в плачевном состоянии, я постараюсь сейчас объяснить. |

| I will start with the symbol. My father was a miner, that is why the story of this tower was of particular interest to me. If you look closely, you will see that this tower is a resemblance to a mining lantern of an old style. For those who have no idea about them, I am putting some photos of such lamps here which I have found on the Internet. You may compare them yourselves. | Начну с символа. Мой отец был шахтером, поэтому история этой башни заинтересовала меня. Если приглядеться, то можно увидеть в этой башне сходство с шахтерским фонарем старого образца. | It is said that this shape of the tower was conceived by the architect because Kohtla Järve is a town of miners. It appeared thanks to the rich deposits of oil shale in 1946, almost immediately after the Second World War. As for the name of the architect of the object that is now an emblem of Kohtla Järve, unfortunately, I could not find it on the World Wide Web, which, of course, is strange. I think that it was some ordinary architect or a group of architects at an enterprise, let's say - at one of the mines, and no one was interested in their names those days, therefore, it was not preserved in history, alas. | Говорят, что такая форма башни была задумана архитектором потому, что Кохтла Ярве - город шахтеров. Он и возник-то благодаря богатым месторождениям горючего сланца в 1946 году, практически сразу после Второй Мировой войны. Что касается имени архитектора того, что сейчас является эмблемой Кохтла Ярве, то, к сожалению, в Мировой Сети мне его найти не удалось, что, конечно, странно. Думаю, что это был какой-нибудь рядовой архитектор или группа архитекторов на предприятии, скажем - на одной из шахт, и его имя тогда никого не интересовало, поэтому и в истории оно не сохранилось, увы. |

| Now about the state of the tower. I think that now the Kohtla Jarve authorities would put her in order, but earlier, until the end of the last century, no one cared about it. Shabby and with roughly boarded up windows and doors, it was meeting those entering the town and was not at all pleasing to the eye. It did not surprise anybody that - in 1989 - it was happily handed over to private hands. The new owner began repairing and tidied up the lower part of the tower - a little, but then he also stopped working on the structure. | Теперь о состоянии башни. Думаю, что сейчас городские власти привели бы ее в порядок, но раньше, до конца прошлого века, никому до неё дела не было. Облезлая и с грубо заколоченными досками окнами и дверями, она встречала въезжающих в город и совсем не радовала глаз. Не удивительно, что в 1989 году её с радостью передали в частные руки. Хозяин начал было ремонт, немного привёл в порядок нижнюю часть, но потом тоже перестал заниматься строением. |

| A few years ago, a local college iniciated a competition for ideas for the revival of this curious historical site. They wanted to make it not only a decoration for the city, but also a place useful for it. The ideas were even pretty good. For example, one of the prepositiond was to make an observation deck on the tower as well as a cafe, where it would be possible not only drink a cup of coffee, but also see an exhibition telling about the history of the town. Someone suggested setting up an art gallery and an information point there. Other ideas included placing an office for renting bicycles or using the building for advertising ... But nothing of the above said has been made, unfortunately ... | Несколько лет назад местный колледж провел конкурс идей по возрождению этого любопытного исторического объекта. Им хотелось сделать его не только украшением города, но и полезным для него местом. Идеи были очень даже неплохими. Так, например,одним из предложений было сделать на башне смотровую площадку и кафе, где можно было бы не только выпить чашечку кофе, но и увидеть выставку, рассказывающую об истории города. Кто-то предлагал устроить там художественную галерею и информационный пункт. Среди других идей были размещение там офиса для аренды велосипедов или использование здания для рекламы ... Но, к сожалению, ничего из этого так и не было сделано ... |

| So, as you can see, the perfectly conceived and well-implemented idea of creating a symbol of the town of miners is not yet pleasing the guests and residents of the town with its appearance. I really hope that the situation will change soon. | Так что, как мы видим, прекрасно задуманная и неплохо воплощенная идея создания символа города шахтёров пока не радует гостей и жителей города своим внешним видом. Очень надеюсь, что ситуация изменится вскоре. |
