Located side by side on one of the hills of Kent State University there is a group of buildings that truly stands out because of their beauty, simplicity and elegance. These structures, which were the first buildings erected at what we know today as Kent State University, are known as Merrill Hall, Lowry Hall, Cartwright Hall, Kent Hall and Franklin Hall. And today, more than a century after their construction, they still are home to several of the university's schools.

Hay un grupo de edificios en mi universidad, la Kent State University, que me llama mucho la atención por su belleza, sencillez y elegancia. Son los cinco primeros edificios que se construyeron en esta universidad entre los años 1910 y 1926. Es decir, me refiero a los edificios más antiguos de nuestro campus, los cuales se encuentran ubicado uno al lado del otro en una de las colinas de nuestro campus. Estos edificios son el Merrill Hall, Lowry Hall, Cartwright Hall, Kent Hall y Franklin Hall. Hoy, más de un siglo después de su construcción, lucen majestuosos e imponentes y son la sede de varias de las escuelas de esta universidad.

The fact that they are the oldest buildings of the university makes them worthy of special appreciation on my part. Their walls hold stories and history; they are the silent witnesses to the founding of this university and its rapid growth. In addition, my great weakness with these buildings is the classic style they display in the design of their facades. I love those columns at their entrances. For me , they look very simple, very minimalist (as they would say today), but at the same time, they are truly imposing and majestic. So, join me to see the exterior facades of each of these buildings.

Ya el hecho de que sean los edificios más antiguos de la universidad, los hace merecedores de un aprecio especial por mi parte. Sus paredes guardan historias y relatos; han sido los testigos silenciosos de la fundación de esta universidad y de su rápido crecimiento. Además, mi gran debilidad con estos edificios es el toque clásico que tienen en el diseño de sus fachadas con el uso de columnas en las entradas. Son edificios que a la vista son muy simples, muy minimalistas (como dirían hoy), pero para mí son realmente imponentes y majestuosos. The two historical photos below show these newly constructed buildings in the early 20th century. To me it is impressive to see how long it took to construct these buildings. They did it with amazing speed. For example, the Lowry and Merrill buildings were built in less than two years, and we're talking that was over 100 years ago, when they didn't have the technology and equipment of today. It's admirable. And, it's hard not to make comparisons with my country, for example, where public works take years and years, money and lots of money to be done. Lots of corruption and bureaucracy. What a pity. Sorry for digressing. Let's see the pictures and get to know the buildings.

Now let's see what these beautiful buildings look like today.

Merril Hall (1913)

As previously mentioned, Merrill Hall, along with Lowry Hall, was built between 1911-1913. That is why it is the oldest building on campus. This building housed the first class on campus in 1913.

Como se ha mencionado anteriormente, Merrill Hall, junto con Lowry Hall, se construyó entre 1911 y 1913. Por ello, es el edificio más antiguo de toda la universidad. Este edificio sirvió para albergar la primera clase del campus en 1913.

What I love and what strikes me about this building are its huge six columns located at the entrance of the building. I consider the column capitals, which belong to the ionic order of classical architecture, to be very elegant.

Merrill Hall today houses the Department of Sociology and the Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence.

Lowry Hall (1913)

This three-story building with large windows originally served as a dormitory for women. Today it is the headquarters of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

I am fascinated by the simplicity in the design of the facade of this building. The use of large Tuscan columns and the numerous windows stand out. In addition, I also find the color of the bricks of the facade very elegant and sober. This color matches perfectly with the color of the windows. It is a very classic design, simple, but very elegant.

Del diseño de este edificio, resalto sus grandes columnas del orden tuscan ubicadas en la entrada del mismo y las tantas ventanas que adornan la fachada. Ademas, también me parecen muy elegante y sobrio el hermoso color coral de los ladrillos que combinan perfectamente con el color de las ventanas.

Cartwright Hall (1915)

Cartwright Hall houses the University Auditorium.

El Cartwright Hall alberga el Auditorio de la Universidad.

I can't explain what I like so much about this building. I do not know if it is the grayish color of the facade or the columns embedded in its walls . Or it could also be the style of the columns, with all its adorned capitals. It could be the cornice or all the ornaments we can see all over the structure, such as on the roof or at the main door.

No puedo explicar qué me gusta tanto de este edificio. No sé si es el color grisáceo de la fachada, las columnas incrustadas en sus fachadas o los capiteles corintios de las mismas, con sus diversos ornamentos.

Kent Hall (1915)

Kent Hall houses the Department of Psychology, the Psychology Clinic and the Center for Applied Psychology.

The facade of this building is quite striking. It closely resembles the facade of Merrill Hall. The only difference is that the columns in Kent Hall are smaller and they are located on the second floor, over walls arched walls. The masonry of the walls of this facade was also made of beige bricks. This gives the building a unique elegant touch.

La fachada de este edificio es bastante llamativa. Se parece mucho a la fachada de Merrill Hall. La única diferencia es que las columnas de Kent Hall son más pequeñas y están ubicadas en el segundo piso, sobre paredes arqueadas. Franklin Hall

Franklin Hall is home to Kent State University's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It is the newest building of all the ones mentioned. It was built in 1926.

Like the other buildings, the classical Greek style was applied to the design of the facade, with large columns and messages inscribed on the front wall .
