I watched my friends and classmates talk about all the memories they had about Christmas, the gifts from relatives, and travels to interesting places. What I had was mostly family and food; the fun was hardly present as my mom preferred to cook for the whole community and my dad busied himself with church activities. My school guardian called me into his office and told me my mom wanted to have a word with me. Phones were not allowed, but my guardian made them available for me whenever I needed to talk to my family.

I want to have a wonderful Christmas, but now I'm in an extreme situation. I don't know anyone, and I don't understand the language of this country.
What will become of my brothers and other relatives? I didn't have a chance to say goodbye to them. What will happen to Elizabeth and Charles? Will they still be alive? It all happened so suddenly. The mortar fire on the city and the enemy encirclement made it impossible for me to return home.
