Between coffee beans, typewriters, photos and projectors

Recently I was passing through a coffee shop that, although I didn't take advantage of it by making relevant graphics, I concentrated on a space that is used as a coffee store and that also has some antiques.

It's a cafe located a few meters from the chocolate shop I visited and you can take a look at it if you want to know a little more about the history of cocoa and chocolate in Venezuela.

Among the glass containers that were recycled and at one time had mayonnaise inside, it now serves to store the coffee beans that the cafeteria uses to prepare a variety of hot drinks. The cafeteria is called Paramo and is very similar to the Starbucks franchise system, in Venezuela there is no such brand but if you are from another country you have probably visited this type of establishment.

But I am not here to talk about the site, nor the products it offers, I will talk about the space that I found interesting, because it groups a number of electrical and mechanical devices that made a milestone in the history of world communication.

When I saw the Remington 2000 sperry rand mechanical calculator and compared it with the calculator that my smartphone has I realized that a little less than a century ago the devices have changed drastically not only in shape but also in their practical use, I imagined carrying a heavy calculator like the Remington in a backpack. It would be extremely uncomfortable.

Then my gaze was focused on the glass containers that contain coffee, that magic seed that wakes me up every morning. I have several friends who are from the United States and Europe and I always talk about the meaning of coffee for the Latin American people. This icon of hot drinks worldwide represents part of our mixed popular culture. Inspired by coffee, poets, singers and even painters have composed numerous works of art.

In a recent publication I spoke about the importance of the mechanical typewriter, it allowed a leap in the speed with which books, letters and infinite applications in the communication field were written, being in front of these antiques made me feel nostalgic for an era that I will never be able to repeat again.

Then my gaze was entertained by the movie projector which was quite expensive for the time and that only wealthy people could afford to spend on a magic machine. Today we can see Netflix on our Smartphones, I am one of those who resists the HD technology that in my personal opinion has no appeal compared to the grain produced by celluloid, these are the successes and failures of the current technique.

To finish my eyes saw an album of still photographs taken during the filming of the great movie the godfather of the film master Francis Ford Coppola. The cafeteria staff did not allow me to browse through the book but at least I was able to capture a graphic of its cover.

It is incredible what the relationship between look and thought can do, this is a fundamental part of my plastic language and I am very excited to be able to share these small moments that remain stored in my mind always relating everything to each other.
