Marriage Evolution

Marriage has evolved over the years. Marriage in those days was something beautiful that people looked up to. Young lovers in those days wanted to get married, seeing how married couples lived, how they shared things, planned things, and were content with each other.

In this generation, a lot of marriages have been broken because of some factors. It’s not as if these factors were not present in the olden-days marriages, it’s just that couples back then knew how to manage them better. Couples these days have wild mentalities. I will write about two major points that I know leads to the breakdown of marriages these days.

The first one is Financial Management. This is not about overspending or underspending. One thing I noticed these days from young couples, especially the female partners, is that they want the man to responsible for all bills and responsibilities that has to do with bills. There’s a common saying they use “My husband’s money is our money and my money is my money”, meaning they use their money for themselves alone. I’ve heard of about two or three couples where the wives would pay the children school fees only when the husband could not due to financial delay, and keep it from the husband, making the husband pay the fees later to the school and then go behind his back to collect the money from the school. Most young girls these days are materialistic, they want material things first before anything. In those days, couples planned things together, and it’s not as if they didn’t have disagreements, but they managed them with patience and perseverance. It’s the reason why their marriages lasted longer. This issue has resulted in a lot of divorces for young couples.

Another major factor that leads to the breakdown of marriages these days is Rushed Marriages. I termed it Rushed Marriages because the couples don’t spend quality time in courtship and don’t know their partners well enough before going into marriage. Many marriages have failed nowadays because of this reason. When the husband goes in one direction and the wife goes in another, ridiculous and little issues become big disagreements between them until they end the marriage. Before getting married in the olden days, good research was conducted by each family about the kind of person the spouse is and the family he or she comes from. Unlike these days, before you know it, the man has brought the lady to the parents for introduction. Marriage goes beyond beauty and love, it takes commitment, endurance, patience, and perseverance

Marriage now is not like before. Some girls go into marriage now for mutual benefits, thinking “you take, I take,” so that if any issue arises that leads to divorce the wife takes part of the husband’s property. Marriage is taking a different shape day by day. I don’t know if I should say the lessons the youth nowadays have learned seem to have faded away or those who are supposed to impact them with the knowledge are gone. The definition of marriage to couples today is love and money, and it’s the reason why marriages nowadays don’t last.
