Chinese quantum computing experts have built a prototype of the world's most powerful quantum computer, dubbed "Jiujiang". They said that it is currently 100 trillion times more powerful than the world's most powerful supercomputer, and 10 billion times faster than the current most powerful quantum computer, 'Google Psychomore'.
Details of the invention were published online in the latest issue of the American research journal “Science”, which means that the claim of the Chinese "quantum supercomputer" has been confirmed by independent experts in the same field. However, Chinese experts have cautiously described their work as a "quantum computational advantage."
This extraordinary work has been performed by experts from the “University of Science and Technology of China” in collaboration with other Chinese research institutes. The team was led by Professor Pan Jianwei, who is world renowned in modern fields such as quantum computing and quantum cryptography.
Professor Jianwei and his team have been working in the field of quantum computers for the past twenty years, and during their long research, they have solved dozens of practical and difficult problems in this field and finally succeeded in inventing the prototype.
The Chinese news agency ‘Xinhua’ called it the first major milestone toward a complete quantum computer, calling it the "Gassian Boson Sampling" (GBS) to prove the capability and performance of the "Zhujiang" prototype. Some complex but traditional computational problems were solved using a classic simulation algorithm.
It detected an average of 43 photons emitted as output in a particular process, with a maximum performance of 76 photons.
Previously, a team of Google-affiliated experts had claimed that they have calculated in just 200 seconds, using their "Psychomore" quantum computer that even the most powerful supercomputer in the world can complete in 10,000 years.
Significantly, the "Zhujiang" quantum computer operates at normal temperatures, while the Psychomor quantum computer, which gave Google a "quantum edge" last year, needed a superconducting circuit in a very cold environment. However, some experts say that "Zhujiang" can only do one thing in its current state and will need to be redesigned to be able to do a variety of different things.
