In the "Big Indonesian Dictionary", engagement is an agreement to become husband and wife. From this understanding, we know that engagement is just an agreement between a man and a woman, they plan to get married at an uncertain time and can postpone it for another year or two. Because at that time, neither of them were ready to start a family or for various other reasons.

In Islam, engagement is a social custom, and if it is not based on Islamic law, then it is permissible.

Especially in the engagement that occurs in today's era, many people do things like a couple even when they are engaged. They follow a foreign culture, which is prohibited by Islamic law.

Rasulullah SAW also said, "If the head of one of you were stabbed with an iron needle, it would be better for him than touching a woman who is not lawful for him." (Narrated by ath-Thabrani in al-Kabir XX/211 and authenticated by Sheikh al-Albani v in ash-Shahihah)

Engagements accompanied by the customs of people other than Muslims, such as exchanging rings, wearing luxurious clothes, and holding mixed celebrations, are also reasons not to get engaged.

Unlike the khitbah (proposal), this is based on Islamic law, because the khitbah has a clear intention for early marriage. The da'wah process begins with a formal request from the male family to the female family.

According to most scholars, if people see the word SWT in the Qur'an, they can also allow the law of khitbah, "And there is no sin for you to propose to women with satire" (Al-Baqarah: 235)

According to Syafi'iyyah, if we follow the actions of the Prophet Muhammad, the law of khitbah can also become a hadith. He preached to Aisyah bint Abu Bakr and Hafsyah bint Umar, there were no obstacles in preaching, such as women who are forbidden to marry or women who are still in the iddah period.
