From this understanding, we know that engagement is just an agreement between a man and a woman, they plan to get married at an uncertain time and can postpone it for another year or two. Because at that time, neither of them were ready to start a family or for various other reasons.
In Islam, engagement is a social custom, and if it is not based on Islamic law, then it is permissible.
Especially in the engagement that occurs in today's era, many people do things like a couple even when they are engaged. They follow a foreign culture, which is prohibited by Islamic law.

According to Syafi'iyyah, if we follow the actions of the Prophet Muhammad, the law of khitbah can also become a hadith.
