Today I want to share a project about the restoration of my vehicle, and current work tool. I tell you that at this moment I work as a tourist carrier on the Island of Margarita Venezuela. To do this, I have a 7-seater DFM minivan type vehicle. It should be noted that the environmental conditions in this area are abrasive for vehicle bodywork. The environment of dust and humidity of salinity (saltpetre), is a potential and silent enemy that favors the corrosion of materials. I tell you that the greatest damage has been to the roof of the vehicle. Now, the ideal would be to change the roof, but I don't @have the budget. Anyway, I made the decision to repair it. Here is a brief description of the procedure:

Hoy quiero compartir un proyecto, sobre la restauración de mi vehículo, y actual herramienta de trabajo. Les comento que en este momento laboro como transportista turístico en la Isla de Margarita Venezuela. Para ello, tengo un vehículo de tipo minivan DFM de 7 puestos. Cabe destacar, que las condiciones ambientales de esta zona, son abrasivas para la carrocería de los vehículos. El ambiente de polvo y la humedad de salinidad (salitre), es un enemigo potencial y silencioso que favorece la corrosión de los materiales. Les comento, que el mayor daño ha sido en el techo del vehículo. Ahora bien, lo ideal sería cambiar el techo, pero no cuento con el presupuesto. De igual manera, tomé la decisión de repararlo. A continuación les indico brevemente el procedimiento que realice:

I removed the rust from the metal, for this I used the following tools; a hand grinder with a wire brush wheel, ladder, wooden block and coarse grit sandpaper. It is important to mention that the surface of the ceiling is not completely flat and has some grooves, there it was only possible to remove the rust using the wooden block with coarse sandpaper. This step was repeated until the metal was completely clean of rust./

Removí el óxido del metal, para ello utilicé las siguientes herramientas; un esmeril de mano con un disco de cepillo de alambres, escalera, taco de madera y lija de grano grueso. Es importante mencionar, que la superficie del techo no es completamente plana y tiene unos canales, allí solo fue posible remover el óxido usando el taco de madera con la lija de grano grueso. Este paso fue repetitivo hasta dejar el metal completamente limpio del óxido.

I covered the holes caused by rust, with fiberglass and resin. For this, I used a fiberglass kit, which is made up of; fiberglass cloth, resin and a drying activator. The procedure was the following; I cut the fiberglass cloth slightly larger than the size of the hole. In a container I mixed the resin with one or two drops of the drying activator, to then moisten the fiberglass cloth, place it in the hole and pass the brush over it impregnated with the resin mixture. This was repeated until all holes were covered.

Cubrí los orificios ocasionados por el óxido, con fibra de vidrio y resina. Para ello, utilicé un kit de fibra de vidrio, el cual está conformado por; tela de fibra de vidrio, resina y un activador secante. El procedimiento fue el siguiente; corté la tela de fibra de vidrio un poco más grande del tamaño del orificio. En un recipiente mezclé la resina con una o dos gotas del activador secante, para luego humedecer la tela de fibra de vidrio, colocarla en el orificio y pasar la brocha por encima impregnada con la mezcla de resina. Esto fue repetitivo hasta cubrir todos los orificios.

Once the fiberglass is hardened, I proceed to paint the entire ceiling with Zinc Chromate paint; For this step, I used as main tools a compressor, paint gun and container to prepare the paint. The procedure to follow was to dilute the paint with thinner, until it had the ideal viscosity and density so that it would flow through the gun with a uniform spray without causing clogging, and cover the entire ceiling with two coats of paint.

Ya endurecida la fibra de vidrio, procedo a pintar todo el techo con pintura de Cromato de Zinc; Para este paso, utilicé como herramienta principal un compresor, pistola de pintar y recipiente para preparar la pintura. El procedimiento a seguir fue diluir la pintura con thinner, hasta tener la viscosidad y densidad ideal para que fluyera por la pistola con un rocío uniforme sin ocasionar taponamiento, y cubrir con dos capas de pintura todo el techo.

Es importante, que tengamos en cuenta la seguridad, al momento de realizar este tipo de trabajo.Por ahora, solo pude ejecutar lo dicho anteriormente, aún falta preparar la carrocería para una pintura en general y dar un mejor acabado final.
