World's largest lithium battery could power 78,000 homes

One of the biggest problems for the general adoption of renewable energy is the fact of not having control over its generation, since it generally depends on natural factors.

Normally when we talk about batteries, their power and autonomy we refer to electric vehicles or devices of more or less reasonable size.

But once again Elon Musk surprises us with the world's largest lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 150 MW.

This battery is located in Hornsdale Power Reserve in Western Australia, occupies one hectare (10,000 m2) and could supply 78,000 homes.

It is located next to the largest wind power plant in South Australia and stores the energy generated by wind turbines, to be used when weather conditions are unfavorable.

The battery is charged when there is excess energy and it is cheaper, and it can be discharged when it is high, thereby lowering the average hourly price for the consumer.

According to local media, the battery has already reduced grid stabilization costs by approximately $ 40 million in its first year of operation, and has saved consumers $ 116 million during 2019.

If these types of solutions were implemented massively in all countries, we could safely dispense with fossil fuels, but there is a lot of money at stake.
