Ecosia plants trees with the advertising revenue generated by the searches of its 15 million users. Each search thus contributes to the planting of a tree in one of the 9000 planting locations.

Ecosia has just passed the milestone of 100 million trees, just two years after the company reached the milestone of 30 million new plantings. Collectively, the trees will extract up to 30 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere when they are fully grown.

Recovery after forest fires

The company has already restored approximately 35,000 hectares of forest and contributed to the protection of biodiversity on all six inhabited continents.

Among other things, Ecosia planted three million trees in Brazil after last year's Amazon forest fires and campaigned to plant trees in Australia after devastating forest fires in early 2020. In Madagascar, the organization planted millions of trees to combat coastal erosion and protect the habitat of the endangered lemurs.

In Burkina Faso, the organization did more than 17 million new plantations in the fight against desertification; in Uganda, there was a collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute, which resulted in the planting of 600,000 trees in the habitat of the endangered chimpanzee.

Young audience

The search engine was launched in 2009 and today mainly reaches a younger audience. According to a recent survey of 11,000 users, 80 percent are under the age of 29.

Christian Kroll, the CEO of Ecosia, commented:

The climate crisis is the biggest existential threat that humanity has ever faced and we have very little time left to prevent a global catastrophe. Our efforts to protect biodiversity have never been more critical, and this milestone of 100 million trees is an important step in the right direction. Most importantly, our trees are not only good for the climate but have also helped tens of thousands of people to build a better future for themselves and their communities. I am really proud of what we have achieved so far, thanks to our passionate users. But we can’t stop here! I hope more people will now make the switch to Ecosia and help us plant billions more trees.

The company has its own solar power plants in Germany, which allegedly ensure that all their activities are CO2 negative. I really hope that more people will switch to Ecosia and eventually help to plant billions of trees.

So I would say: join, get the free browser extension and plant trees with every search!
