Considerado el iniciador del realismo como movimiento pictórico (pueden leer al respecto en esta entrada), Gustave Courbet, pintor francés que naciera el 10 de junio de 1819, asentó un estilo y mirada que venía tomando cuerpo en la pintura francesa y que continuará con grandes artistas.

Considered the initiator of realism as a pictorial movement (you can read about it in this post), Gustave Courbet, French painter born on June 10, 1819, established a style and look that was taking shape in French painting and that will continue with great artists.

Tómese en cuenta que el realismo como movimiento –que no hay que confundir con el enfoque realista, que ha existido a lo largo de la historia del arte– se plantea como una concepción estética reactiva contra cierto romanticismo y academicismo, y se dará de modo resaltante en la literatura de ese siglo –el XIX–, teniendo como destacados cultivadores a Henri Stendhal y a Honoré de Balzac. Aunque muchas veces denostado, el realismo tuvo en sus principales exponentes no solo obras de sumo valor artístico, sino también aportes para el desarrollo posterior del arte.

Courbet, como muchos otros pintores, incursionó en diferentes motivos o temas: el retrato, el bodegón, la “naturaleza muerta”, el paisaje, hechos históricos, pero quizás uno de los más llamativos es el desnudo.

It should be noted that realism as a movement -not to be confused with the realist approach that has existed throughout the history of art- was conceived as a reactive esthetic conception against a certain romanticism and academicism, and it would be prominent in the literature of that century -the 19th-, with Henri Stendhal and Honoré de Balzac as outstanding cultivators. Although often reviled, realism had in its main exponents not only works of great artistic value, but also contributions to the subsequent development of art.

Courbet, like many other painters, dabbled in different motifs or themes: portraiture, still life, still life, landscape, historical events, but perhaps one of the most striking is the nude.

El desnudo ha contado con grandes expresiones e importantes artistas (dibujantes, pintores, escultores), constituyendo, sin duda, toda una tradición. Pero, ¿dónde está la relevancia de Courbet en este subgénero de la pintura? Hablemos un poco de ello.

El tratamiento dado al desnudo, en este caso femenino, por Courbet es lo que lo hace particularmente resaltante. Su mirada realista, influida por una actitud rebelde y provocadora (no es casual su amistad con Charles Baudelaire, el gran poeta de la modernidad, autor del poema “La Carroña”), lo lleva a pintar cuadros verdaderamente osados para su tiempo (alguno de ellos permanecieron prohibidos por mucho tiempo).

Siendo seguidor de las artes en general, y de la plástica en particular, había visto cuando joven algunas de sus obras en libros y fascículos de historia del arte, entre ellas sus desnudos. Pero fue mucho más tarde cuando “descubrí” ese cuadro que, a la par, de impactarme, me permitió revaluar el aporte de Courbet. Me refiero a la obra conocida con el título “El origen del mundo”.

The nude has had great expressions and important artists (draftsmen, painters, sculptors), constituting, undoubtedly, a whole tradition. But where is Courbet's relevance in this subgenre of painting? Let's talk a little about it.

The treatment given to the nude, in this case female, by Courbet is what makes it particularly outstanding. His realistic look, influenced by a rebellious and provocative attitude (it is not by chance his friendship with Charles Baudelaire, the great poet of modernity, author of the poem "The Carrion"), leads him to paint truly daring pictures for his time (some of them remained banned for a long time).

Being a follower of the arts in general, and of the plastic arts in particular, I had seen as a young man some of his works in books and fascicles of art history, among them his nudes. But it was much later when I "discovered" that painting which, while shocking me, allowed me to reevaluate Courbet's contribution. I am referring to the work known as "The Origin of the World".

Una obra pictórica quizás sin parangón, incluso hoy, de una osadía y visión realista sin igual. Data de 1866 y pareciera pertenecer a un tiempo más actual, donde el arte se desató en perspectivas y modos. Permaneció oculta durante mucho tiempo (pueden conocer más de su historia aquí], siendo entregada al Estado francés en 1981 y comenzada a exhibir en 1995 en el Museo de Orsay en París.

El título, que no se sabe si fue autoría de Courbet, no puede ser más apropiado. Al contemplar el cuadro, no solo advertimos que es en ese lugar del cuerpo femenino, tan magistralmente recreado por Courbet, donde se crea la vida por el acto sexual que hace posible la concepción, sino que también por él salimos al mundo.

A pictorial work perhaps unparalleled, even today, of unparalleled boldness and realistic vision. It dates from 1866 and seems to belong to a more current time, where art was unleashed in perspectives and modes. It remained hidden for a long time (you can learn more about its history here), being handed over to the French State in 1981 and started to be exhibited in 1995 at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

The title, which is not known to have been authored by Courbet, could not be more appropriate. When contemplating the painting, we not only notice that it is in that place of the female body, so masterfully recreated by Courbet, where life is created by the sexual act that makes conception possible, but also through it we go out into the world.
