Series of events are being organised to mark the occasion across the nation.Behind all the celebrations,there is a history of fierce rebellions,wars and movements by thousands of spirited indians who fought,struggled and even sacrificed their lives to get india free from colonial power.

The great Rebellion of 1857 was the first expression of organised resistance against the British East India.It began on May 10,1857 in the form of a revolt by sepoys of company's army in the garrison of Meerut.Mangal Panday a soldier launched the first attack by firing at English officials.Dhondu Pant Nana Saheb Peshwa with his audacity and fearlessness prepared and led a group of ardent soldiers to overwhelm the British forces in kanpur.Babu Veer Kunwar Singh started in Bihar at the age of 80 and targeted British with guerrilla warefare tactics.Queen of Jhansi Rani Lakshmi Bai was key member of this great Rebellion.She inspired thousands of women to begin part in this freedom struggle and defended her palace in 1858.Tantia Tope,a firm follower of Nana Saheb led a group in kanpur.

This saw a more radical approach towards political self rule proposed by leaders such as Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirate.Most popular among them was Keshav Gangadhar Tilak better known as Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.He gave the slogan swaraj is my birthright and I will have it.Lala Lajpat Rai earned the title of Punjab Kesari and' Lion of punjab'.Same was the Bipin Chandra pal joined national movement and in Swadeshi movement.In short the trio of Lal,Bal,Pal occupied opposite spectrum of the freedom struggle Mahatma Gandhi.

The first Prime minister of independent India,Sri Jawaharlal Nehru, occupies the most prominent place among India's nation-buiders.He put the newly independent country on the path of modern development and built several institutions.Similarly,India's geography owes much to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who got hundreds of princely states to accede in the then emerging federal structure of India.He is well known by the name of Iron man of India....
