Drawing+Story: Dendrites

dsmall.jpg

The night before last, a storm caused an old tree to fall in this neighborhood. On my walk yesterday, I observed some broken twigs on the ground. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of them because—in this day and age, out of an abundance of caution—I don't like to go for a walk with any electronics on me. Then again, satellites are keeping track of all our locations in realtime anyway. You don't even have to listen to the voices inside your head to realize that. Just listen to Snowden. Then again, is it possible that maybe Snowden is in your head?

Anyway, the twigs inspired this drawing.

We can already see creatures starting to creep in.

Instead of the usual “shiny amœbas” or blobs of pitch, I am making these more natural ones here.

The skull is going to be the only place where the endings of the dendrites are not going to be red. It's dead, so there is no inflammation.

This is the moment I decided to sign and date the work.

When I draw at night, the progress shots always seem to have a reddish hue. For the final black-and-white shot, I like to clean it up a little, just in case you feel like printing it out and coloring it yourself:

Color is going to be crucial for this particular picture.

Can you see the owl now?

When I started this drawing, I felt like it would be the first of my recent drawings without a single eye in it. Little did I know…

Once again I used my Noodler's Triple Tail fountain pen, Bernanke Black, and Arteza colored pencils on Rhodia paper.
