Popularly known as the Desert Route or Conquest of the Desert, the Provincial Route 20 is a route with very particular characteristics.
It is practically a huge rectilinear (in length) that is more than 200 km, on an absolutely flat surface, with only two very slight curves.
It is so monotonous that it leads to distraction and numbness. Especially in summer when high temperatures make you fall asleep at the wheel. Which in many cases is usually fatal.
Indeed, numerous posters on the side of the route warn about this phenomenon.
Routine driving, fatigue, cause drowsiness that in many cases cause fatal accidents.
It is the gateway to Patagonia for tourists (and non-tourists) who transit and arrive from La Pampa or from the west of the province of Buenos Aires.
It joins the towns of Chacharramendi and 25 de Mayo in the Province of La Pampa.
This route that I show you in images I did a few years ago (2017) and I found the route in fairly good condition, despite the criticism I had felt.
The terrifying state of the route appears at the end of the Desert Route and entering Rio Negro. There was (and I think it is still in the same state) a section of road in such precarious conditions that it was necessary to advance at a man's pace for more than 10 kms.
There is a lot of traffic which helps a lot to stay awake and attentive.
On the one hand it is a unique and alienating experience.
On the horizon you can see nothing other than the immensity of a semi-arid and semi-desert landscape that is gradually transforming into the Patagonian steppe.
For this reason, the province of La Pampa was included in the benefits of the Patagonian area, although, traditionally, it was never part of Argentine Patagonia.
