The Future of the Toyota Supra

There’s always been something about the Toyota Supra that has appealed to me. I got very excited when the MkV Supra was released in 2019 because it looked amazing and had that exciting performance we all expect from a Supra. However, given what we have heard recently regarding the discontinuation of the BMW Z4 next year, I’m starting to become a bit apprehensive about the future of the Supra.

This car has never been meant for mass market sales; therefore it is somehow a peculiar type. But still, it did well, especially in 2021 when it sold 6,830 units in America. However, those figures fell sharply last year to just 2,652. This is quite a significant decrease. This makes me want to question whether keeping this car going is prudent but mainly when its sibling model Z4 is struggling in sales as well.

I know Toyota hasn’t made any firm announcements yet but there are still some things they are looking into. They are still studying their opportunities though so far nothing concrete has come out concerning this matter. In case they want something built according to Dave Christ who serves as North American group VP of Toyota Corporation then they will build one too no matter how complex or easy it may be. That gives me some hope for this reason alone; Toyota has money and enthusiasm for making wonderful sports cars thus there may be something left for the Supra future.

One of the thrilling possibilities is that Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda have recently made new engines. These are smaller and hybrid engines that are more fuel-efficient and powerful. A modern efficient engine might give the Supra a new lease on life if Toyota decides to go in this direction. It’s a slim chance but it’s something I enjoy pondering on.

Next year, we expect another version of the Supra called GRMN Supra, which will supposedly come equipped with an engine from BMW M3 as well as possibly a manual transmission. This could be a sign from Toyota about what lies ahead for the Supra. If it does well and receives positive feedback, it may influence Toyota’s decision to keep the Supra going.

Ultimately, I am still optimistic. To me, the Supra means more than just one car—it stands for all that is amazing about Toyota’s ingenuity when it comes to cars. Whether through an explosive finale or continuation in another guise, I believe that Toyota will make a wise choice concerning this issue. In any case, car enthusiasts like me will always hold dear memories of the glorious past of Supra.
