Children's interest in reading decreases. Why?

The ease of obtaining information in the digital era has created new problems. I, as an educator at one of the schools, received complaints from parents. They complain about how difficult it is for children to get used to reading. The parents of the students said that their children preferred to sit pretty in front of the TV, preferred to use mobile phones to play games and various other complaints.

That is a new problem that has emerged which is currently a problem, namely the lack of interest in reading in students' children. This is what may be the cause of decreased achievement of some children in my class. From this problem I can only draw conclusions, why students' interest in reading is decreasing. Here are some conclusions that I can present regarding the causes of the decline in reading interest of students in my class in particular and children in general.

  1. Easily receive information instantly.
The ease of receiving information instantly through information technology media such as Google, Yahoo, Baidu and the like is one of the reasons why children lose interest in reading. Because when they get their assignment, they just need to search through search engines. They are not aware that when they are at school the use of mobile phones is restricted and there are times when the school does not allow it, for example during tests and so on.

  2. The influence of social media.
Social media such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter and so on are like addiction. Children who are used to using this media will reduce their habit of reading. I, who should have been used to read, was used more for social media. If this is continuously allowed, it is not impossible that a child will forget to read things related to learning at school. In this case it is our duty as parents to limit the use of mobile phones so that children's reading interest in reading grows back.

  3. Lots of entertainment through TV media. From the statements of the parents above, it is very clear that children prefer to sit pretty in front of the TV rather than reading books. Therefore it is expected that parents limit their children from watching TV. Not only that, not all entertainment on television is age-appropriate.

  4. Lack of direct example from parents.
The busyness of parents in earning a living is one of the reasons parents themselves rarely read books. Many parents only expect their children to read books but they themselves never use books as a source for reading. From here, children who used to follow their parents' example when they saw that their parents had never read a book, so their interest in reading decreased.

Those are some of the explanations that I took as a conclusion why children's interest in reading at this time is starting to decline. It is our duty to revive children's interest in reading by providing various reading sources. And the most important thing is that we set an example for our children so that they will have an interest in reading. So we also have to diligently read books.

Thank you to all my friends who have stopped by on my blog, I hope this post is useful. Keep the spirit, take care of your health and always be grateful.
