The Enduring Heartache of Madeleine McCann's Disappearance

source

For 17 years, Madeleine McCann has been missing since she disappeared in Portugal when her family was on vacation. As a parent, I can’t even imagine the pain that Gerry and Kate McCann have to go through every single day of their lives not knowing what happened to their little girl.

Gerry and Kate just released a statement on the anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance. They said that they still can't believe she's gone and it hurts so much. I can only guess how hard it must be for them not to know what happened all this time later and still keep waiting for some answers.

What I find most amazing is how resilient and hopeful they are. They have faith that they will find Madeleine alive, even though the years go by. It’s really incredible.

When German authorities announced that a suspect had been identified – Christian Brückner, there was a flicker of hope. But it is disappointing to learn he denies any involvement, and there is insufficient evidence to charge him with anything. The hunt goes on, however, and so does Gerry and Kate’s refusal to give up until they know what happened to their daughter, or until those responsible are brought before a court of law.

Being a parent, I can understand their love for the child and quest for answers. It’s all they want now; to find Madeleine and be at peace at last. This is something any parent would feel.

The McCann’s story reminds us how fast life can change and how precious each moment with our loved ones should be. Their strength in the midst of such tragedy shows that love and hope are powerful.

Like many people, I will keep Madeleine and her family in my thoughts and prayers. My wish is that they find out what happened soon; also that it brings them closure.

For now, justice must be sought after by them so as not to leave any loose ends behind. Moreover, I still believe one day she will come back home safe and sound.
