Splinterlands Weekly Battle Challenges - Another week, Another Challenge - Spiders are scary - flaming lava spiders definitely not something you'd want to wake up to!

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

It's a card I don't use often from the Fire Splinter - the sniping Lava Spider!

Lava Spider.png

I rarely use this card as Tarsa buffs melee so I generally choose melee over ranged in the fire splinter.

GOOD - Lava Spider is good with its low mana cost (3), solid health for a low mana card (4), it has two speed and a ranged snipe attack so good for battles where ranged/snipe are useful.

BAD - Doesn't synergise well with Tarsa and thus is often overlooked as it's ranged attack at base level is weak (1).

The Battle

The rules for this battle were:

  • 22 mana cap - not huge but big enough to allow some big cards

  • Earthquake - all melee have the sneak ability

  • Explosive Weaponry

  • All splinters except Death available

Lots of splinters available but only one choice for me - Earthquake means flying means Brighton Bloom.

Weekly Battle - Lava Spider (Lineup).png

And so my lineup was as follows:

Brighton Bloom (4) - For Flying of course!;

Tusk the wild (6) - for the void armor to mitigate magic spam;

Antoid Platoon (4) - with shield to mitigate blast damage;

Lava Spider (3) - snipe attack, decent health to fit into the low cap and of course for the challenge!;

Serpentine Spy (3) - for the fast opportunity attack;

Naga Assassin (2) - to fill in the team with a quick ranged attack.

This team used all 22 mana with most importantly Brighton for flying, a tank with void to mitigate magic, a secondary tank to guard against some blast, lava spider for a snipe attack (always good with blast, a fast opportunity attacker hoping for a quick kill and a filler at the end.

And my opponent went with Water:

Kelya (4) - Armor and speed - always good and the armor can help tank an earthquake hit|;

Serpent of Eid (7) - Dodging Tank - with the extra speed can be annoying;

Deep Lurker (6) - Powerful melee opportunity attack;

Ice Pixie (2) - Cheap magic attack;

Angelic Mandarin (3) - low cost ranged attack;

Also using all 22 this team is trying to kill mine before earthquake can kill it as the only flyer on this team is the Ice Pixie.

So lets see what happens:

Turn One - Both teams trade shots but his team seems much more effective with the lurkers powerful melee attack taking out both the Serpentine Spy and the Naga with the Blast effect. The turn ends with Tusk on nine life, Eid on two armor and five life. The Antoid Platoon and Tusk have mitigated some of the blast and magic damage but the lurker is a beast!

Turn Two - Two kills by his team already makes things look dire BUT Earthquake starts turn two and leaves the lineups as follows:

Eid's armor gets taken out and while his team is still intact they cant take much more earthquake attacks. The turn plays out with both teams trading shots but the Spider manages to take out the pixie and due to snipe weakens both the Lurker and the Mandarin. A crucial Lurker miss and Tusk managing to hit Eid despite the speed and dodge means things are looking up for my team with Tusk on five life and Eid on four life. The blast from that gamechanging Tusk hit means Lurker only has two life and will die to Earthquake at the start of turn three.

Turn Three - After Earthquake it's a clear advantage to me as his team is all but dead and will not survive another quake so would have to defeat my team this turn:

And the turn plays out with some misses and only the Lava Spider does any damage killing the Mandarin and damaging the Eid. Tusk survives and the match ends at the start of turn four with EARTHQUAKE finishing off the Eid.

So some things to note about the Lava Spider - it survived well thanks to its decent health pool for such a low mana cost. With Blast Snipe is a strong ability as it can often hit three targets in a round which definitely helped here as it meant the Lurker got taken out before it could eat my team.

And that's another battle won - big cheer for Brighton for the win!
