That Night -| The Ink Well Fiction Prompt #141

The moon hung low, casting an eerie glow over the small neighborhood. It was Halloween night, a time for both pleasure and terror. Everyone expected the usual Halloween festivities, but this year would take a new turn.

On one side of Wilyston Street was an old abandoned bungalow known as the Wilyston House. The street was named after Mr. Wilyston, who used to create immense excitement and fun for children during every Halloween. That particular night, the Wilyston's child, in the spirit of Halloween, joined the throngs of costumed figures who had gathered at their house for the festivities.

Ema, the only daughter of the Wilyston family, was led to the darker part of the bungalow by a covered figure. This mysterious figure produced a sharp object and fatally stabbed her. The Wilyston family was the target, and the murderer continued until the entire family had been wiped out. The last was Mrs Wilyston whose endless screaming before she gave up to ghosts was witnessed by the children who left the building running helter-skelter for their homes.

The murderer was sentenced to imprisonment, since then, no family had the courage to do the goodwill the Wilyston's family left behind, Halloween had taken on a new form. While children and adults still roamed the streets in colorful costumes, there was a shadow over the once joyous celebration.

Mesa, a young teenager with sparkling eyes and fiery dyed red hair, had plans to spend her Halloween in the Wilyston House. She was determined to experience Halloween in the mansion. Dressed in a magnificent ghost costume, she conspired with her sibling, Mark and Bernadette, who was her friend.

As the streets buzzed with children collecting candies, Mesa, Mark, and Bernadette set out for the Wilyston House. When they arrived, they saw a tall hooded figure waving them forward.

"Wow, I thought no one was supposed to be here. The young man welcoming us seems suspicious," Mark said, fear creeping into his voice.

"Look here, see what that signpost says. Halloween is still on," replied Mesa.

"It might just be one of the old signposts. Let's not overthink it and keep moving. This is Halloween; it's supposed to be fun. What if the man doesn't have evil intentions?" Bernadette responded.

A chill ran down Mesa's spine as the hooded figure continued beckoning them. Mark clutched his candy bag, and Bernadette walked with fear etched on her face.

With a mixture of fear and eagerness, they entered the overgrown compound, and their footsteps crunched on the dead leaves. The hooded figure welcomed them with a whisper, "Welcome to the Wilyston House. I am the keeper. Let's have a tour."

Their desire for adventure overpowered their nervousness. They followed the keeper into the dark mansion, where cobwebs covered every corner, and the air was filled with the scent of decay. In the dilapidated rooms, they saw costumed figures hanging in the air.

"These are not costumed ghosts but members of the Wilyston family," the keeper revealed.

As the children ended their Halloween night in peace, Mesa felt emotional all through the night, every story she had heard about the murder of the Wilyston family kept replaying in her heart, empathy made her want to do something but was blank on what to do.

As the children rested in their homes, there was different.

"Help us feel happy again. We enjoyed the company we had on Halloween night with you and your friends."

"How can i do that, when you can do that with your family."

"If only it's possible. I would have done it for my daughter's happiness. Her soul is captured and the only way for her to be released is when she see children in the Wilyston's family again."

"I don't know what to do to bring children to the mansion since it's already old and eerie."

You are a brave girl, in your quiet moment you can come up with something. We enjoyed the Hallewon visit. I know you will do this for....

Immediately, Mesa jumped up from her sleep scared as she run off the room looking every corner of the house to locate her mum's present.

She shared the experience with her parents who were inspired to to help her honor the memory of the Wilyston family. With the awareness of how Halloween party occurs in the Wilyston's house and his kindness and love for the kids. Together, they visited other members of the neighborhood, sharing with them the need to honour the souls of Wilyston family.

In unity the neighborhood visited the building, placing flowers and lighting candles in remembrance. With collective efforts from neighborhood, the old mansion was eventually renovated and transformed into a charity home where kids from the less privilege were raised.
