My First Biggest Surprise~Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well: Prompt #18

Four years ago, I lived with my uncle. He leaves the house early and returns late everyday due to the nature of his job. This was his everyday routine from Monday till Saturday. This made me have empathy for him because the work was stressing him more than he deserves.

Living a bachelor's life and taking me in to stay with him made me play the role of a wife. He never asked me to do any of the things but my only way of showing my appreciation was through doing those. I made sure there is cooked food in the house, keep the house clean, and other chores I can do.

Whenever he returns and sees that I have done all these, I see in his face a newfound excitement. He will appreciate my efforts and ask me not to work myself out. I have not felt so appreciated in my life the way he appreciates me whenever he comes back to see I have done almost all the things he would have needed to do if I were not around.

I stayed there for a year before I gained my admission and I decided to leave uncle John's house. It was around 8AM on Saturday and my uncle had not left for work. I was surprised, I asked him why and he told me I will soon find out.

He asked me to make a list of things we need to restock in the kitchen which I did and he gave me the money to go get them. Not knowing that my Uncle John sent me to the market for a purpose.

While I left, my uncle began with his plans. He was able to achieve everything before I arrived because he had paid those people he needed their service earlier enough. After hours spent in the market, I came back and opened the door to see the house filled with guests. They all welcomed me with smiles on their faces. The dining was filled with different kinds of drinks, foods and three layers of cake. I concluded that maybe one of my uncle's friends is celebrating his birthday.

My uncle came out from his room and called me. I stepped out and he asked me to join them on the table. I was excited of course because the table was indeed inviting. He began "You deserve more than this Maryanne, this is a surprise treat for you, you deserve it for working so hard everyday in this house".

The unexpected surprise left my eyes filled with tears of joy as I thanked him for his generosity and recognizing my little effort. He went into his room, brought out a design gift box and handed it to me. I opened it and I found a brand new Infinix Hot 8 pro phone and a paper with his handwriting which read, "I will begin by saying congratulations on your admission, I will sponsor your 2 years tuition". I was so so excited, my joy knew no bounds. I have never been appreciated like that before. I thanked him in all the ways I could, the guests thanked him too on my behalf as the treat was indeed a big surprise.

After the appreciation, we all joined hands and cut the cake, everyone ate to his or her satisfaction and departed. Two days after the big surprise, I left my uncle's house to stay with my brother who lives in the state in which I was granted admission.

My uncle fulfilled his promise, the phone he bought for me is what I am still using now and I'm so happy for him as he is now engaged to his fiancee. He is not just an uncle to me but my role model. He has taught me lots of things in life.
