An inkwell Prompt: A Weekend in Vegas.

“You know beautiful! It’s not good sportsmanship to pick up a golf ball while it’s still rolling!”. A tall handsome guy said to me while he approached me with a smug look on his face.

“Yea? Says who?”. I replied the handsome man in front of me while rolling my eyes.

“Says good sportsmen”. He said with a pretty smile that looked like trouble.

I had the golf ball in my hand now.

“I’m Nathan Beaucroft and you are?”. He said

“I’m Naomi Montgomery”. I replied.

He looked like he was around my age. I was 20 years old. And I had agreed to come to this stupid boring function all the way in Vegas with my parents. I was their only child, their ‘pride and joy’ as they would casually say. My parents were filthy rich so to say, we were currently at a golden suite in one the most expensive hotels in Vegas. We arrived on Friday and were supposed to leave on Monday , today was Saturday and since we arrived her I’ve been by myself while they were out doing “business-stuff”, I had a black card so I had all the money I could spend. Only if I had company.

I decided to play golf this afternoon to kill time after being couped up in the hotel suite all day. The hotel had a golf course so that was where I was until someone kept swinging golf balls which ended up hitting my legs. Yes that person was Nathan Beaucroft.

“Nice meeting you Naomi. I’m here with my family for a function which is supposed to last all weekend. Meanwhile we’re staying at the Pavilion hotel”.

“No way me too!”. I replied.

I and Nathan got talking. Turns out we were staying at the same hotel and both our families were here for the same function but he wasn’t an only child like I was. He had an elder brother and younger sister. Oh and he was a year older than I was. His parents had also been very busy since they arrived, they were very wealthy as well. You’d think he had his siblings but they had friends here and he ended up being lonely.

Later at night I invited him over to my suite since I was the only one there. We ordered room service and had a sumptuous dinner. We got talking about school- we’re both in college, about our families and made plans of how we were going to make the most of this trip. Before he went back to his suite we decided to spend the whole of Sunday, which was tomorrow together since we were both leaving on Monday.

Sunday Morning
9:00 AM

My parents had left earlier but I told them of my plans for the day so they wouldn’t get worried.
I heard the bell ring. I didn’t order room service so it had to be Nathan. I lazily got out of bed and opened the door.

“Morning Sunshine”. He enthusiastically said.

“Good morning”. I said before going back to lie down.

“Don’t tell me you’ve not had your bath yet. There’s no time”. He sounded angry.

“Time for what exactly? We don’t even have a plan yet!”. I groaned

“I told you I’d sort that out and plan it. So please get ready”. He said

“Well let’s hear it”. I said while brushing my teeth and looking for an outfit at the same time.

“No can do Princess, you’ll spoil the fun”. He said while I rolled my eyes.

30 Minutes later...

I was done bathing. I settled for shorts and a Travis Scott Polo and a pair of sandals. I had my hair in a bun as well.

“Why do you women take so long to get ready?”. Nathan said while rolling his eyes.

“Calm down I’m done dressing. I just have to pack my purse”. I said finally stepping out.

“Someone looks cute. Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit”. He said while smiling.

“Wait we’re going swimming?”. I asked.

“That’s what swimsuits are used for Naomi, unless you wear them to the movies”. He said while rolling his eyes.

I grabbed a bikini and stuffed them into my purse. Nathan had brought a Polaroid camera incase our phone batteries died.

We had a quick swim at the hotel cabanas while we asked someone to take pictures of us both. From there we joined a tour guide that took us to iconic places in Vegas for like four hours. We also tried out different restaurants along the way. We ate to our hearts content. We were having so much fun and it was even better because we had more than enough money which made it pretty awesome. That feeling of “I want it, I got” (seeing what you want and actually getting it because you have the money). We went shopping and bought a few items, we went to the amusement park and entered lots of rides. And finally when Nathan said the last thing on the list was going to a casino that was when I understood the feeling I got the first time I laid eyes on him- His smile looked like trouble.

“No I’m not going!”. I said

“C’mon Naomi! We’d just spend like two hours there and we’ll head back to the hotel”. He pleaded.

“I’m just not a fan of gambling”. I said lowly.

“Who said anything about gambling. Besides we have a few bucks to spare and you don’t have to do any gambling, I can stake my money. It’s just for fun. This is Vegas!”. He said trying to convince me.

“Well okay if you say so. You owe me ice cream”. I said finally giving in.

“Whatever you want. Besides whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”. He said happily.

“Says someone who brought a Polaroid camera to capture everything moment”. I said and we both laughed before entering the casino.

Two hours later..

I and Nathan had taken a few drinks so we were pumped. He had been quite lucky and had been winning, he had quadrupled the money he put it and I was tempted to try. Just this one time.

“Are you sure you want to try? It’s getting pretty late and we should be heading back”. Nathan said in a concerned tone.

“Yeah. If the risk is high, the reward is high. So why not roll the dice? . I said determined to leave my comfort zone.

“Besides if you roll and don’t win, you can roll again”. He said trying to cheer me on.

“Like my mum said, ‘when life knocks you down, roll over and look at the stars’. So young man, if I loose over and over again we’re watching the stars on the golf course this night”. I said and placed my bet.

After placing my bet, I didn’t feel so confident again and decided I and Nathan would leave then and enjoy the rest of night. But Nathan persuaded me to wait.

“You won!”. I heard Nathan scream while I was ordering an Uber on my phone.

“Wait who?”. I asked.

“You!!”. Nathan screamed and I didn’t know when I jumped on him and kissed him.

Well that was awkward but Nathan didn’t pull away. I apologized while we were on our ride home. We got to the hotel and said Goodnight. I felt like I screwed up a good friendship deep down in my heart.

The next morning while we were packing and preparing to get to the airport I remembered I hadn’t collect Nathan’s phone number. There was no way I was leaving without getting his number. I immediately left my suite and sprinted to his, hoping he had left yet. Mid way there I hit a brick wall and fell flat on the ground. I looked up and of course there he was looking at me, the brick wall I hit was his chest.

“I didn’t get your number”

“I didn’t get your number”

We both said simultaneously and laughed.

“How come I fell on the floor and you didn’t”. I said getting up.

“For one you have scrawny arms and legs. Secondly I work out and I’m pretty sure you don’t”. He said.

“I’ll miss you”. I said feeling sad.

“I’ll miss you too”. He said and kissed me.

We exchanged numbers and promised to keep in touch. We had to put our parents’ private jets to good use.

Five Years Later...

Five years later I’m married to the man I met on a weekend in Vegas. A man whose first words to me were; “You know beautiful! It’s not good sportsmanship to pick up a golf ball while it’s still rolling!”.
