The Ink Well Prompt #53 - The Cross-Road

In a haste and rage, the man was cursing and shouting at his wife. The two children rose from their beds and entered the living room when they heard their father's voice.

They sat silently on one armchair, fearful of their father's rage. The dad continued to grumble to the kids, oblivious to his wife's distress:

"Didn't I tell you?" It's a meeting today, therefore I told you to iron the light blue shirt." What if you wore a brown shirt instead of a white one?

Today I'm giving a presentation; should I portray a negative picture, I'll let the audience decide, and this will influence how they vote on the project! Is this something you want?

His wife, who was hurriedly ironing the blue shirt, said, "Okay, it's done," and the man snatched it up and screamed, "Of course, it's finished, but it's finished after I'm late," he shouted angrily.

After seeing the children's terrified expressions, the woman attempted to reassure her husband once more. "You were even later yesterday; there's still time; you'll catch up."

"You don't get it, you don't get it; I'm going to do the presentation today." I have to walk ahead of everyone else so that I can greet the key guests with a "Welcome."

The man walked away, yelling and saying a few more words before starting his car and driving away. "At least he shouldn't have an accident," the woman thought, worrying about her husband's predicament behind the wheel, who was also unhappy.

"Since you got up early, I will prepare and serve you a breakfast fit for my heroes," she said as she hugged his children and tried to console them.

She went into the kitchen and quickly turned on a radio that was playing upbeat music to calm her nerves. She started boiling an egg on the stove and heated milk in the coffee pot.

She didn't forget to set the table with olives, cheese, and jam. "Your breakfast is ready!" she yelled out after a while to her children.

The music on the radio abruptly ceased while the kids were eating breakfast. With the breaking news broadcast, she turned up the radio volume a little higher.

On the radio, there came a report of a chain accident. The announcer had remarked, "We'll be together with the details in a moment," but she had sunk in her chair from the time they gave her the site of the accident.

The four-way crossroads that her husband passes through every day on his way to work was the accident site mentioned by the announcer. He remembered his wife complaining about the traffic at this crossing, claiming that it was congested every morning.

"I'm wondering if he's rushing because I'm late..." The thought that sprang to mind wounded her much more, so she stood up right away.

"Guys, keep in mind that approaching the quarry is prohibited. Breakfast, then to the living room to play. I have to go to an emergency room; please don't answer the door to anyone."

Despite the fact that her children were well-behaved and obedient, she would constantly chastise them whenever she had to leave them home alone, even for a short time.

To go out, she snatched some clothes and a cab fare from his pocket. She couldn't stand her heart, which was racing with worry that her husband had died in the accident, and began to cry as she approached the door.

She made sure she turned her back on the open kitchen door so the kids wouldn't see her crying. She understood her anguish originated from the likelihood that her husband had died, as well as the fact that she had broken down and screamed in front of her children on the way there.

He wasn't always this enraged, though. 'Will my children remember their father as they were last seen if he dies?' Will they be remembered as a heartbroken, furious father?' she wondered.

On her way out the door, she was going to cry out to her children one more time, but her tears were no longer hidden.

She moved quickly to open the door and exit, but her husband was already standing in front of her, heading towards the door. "Did you listen to the news?" she inquired as the man glanced at his wife's wet cheeks for a moment.

His wife was unable to speak and could only nod. The man wrapped his arms around his wife and wiped the tears from her cheeks. "You were late for an important meeting, why did you come back?" the woman inquired, her voice trembling.

"The collision occurred directly next to me." I then realized I had neglected something far more important than the appointment. If I had been killed in the accident."

The children approached them at that point, and they stood beside their mother, fearful that their father might become enraged again.

The guy drew his children to him, held their necks, and kissed them on the cheeks with all his sincere and sorry grins.

"I made a big mistake today by forgetting to tell you how much I love you before leaving the house. Is it possible that such a significant event may be overlooked? What can I say, I'm back as well."
