The tribal conflict//The inkwell writing prompt

The people of Ngas and Apa disliked each other even though they shared boundaries. Stories hold that a native of Ngas had once starved a man from Apa food which led to his death and the people of Ngas were told that it was the people from Apa who revealed the secret of their land to their enemies. No one who lives now witnessed the event but the story had been passed down to generations, so they forbid any form of union between them as they lived like enemies.

Sarah and James met while in school and fell in love with each other before they could realize where they came from. Though They knew it was difficult for their parents to accept that they get married coming from the enemy clan, they continued in their relationship after school and hoped they would get married not minding that their tribe hates the other, but were ready to take the chance and allow fate determine their future.

"Dad, I have seen a woman I want to marry"

"Where is she from?" His parents asked.

"Uhm, dad, you know..." He started when his dad cut him short

"We only asked where she was from?"

"Dad, please come down to Lagos, we'll talk about it when you've arrived, I have made preparations for your journey".

Sarah also invited her dad down to Lagos, they hoped convincing them against their belief about each other would be productive.

James and Sarah's dad both boarded a night bus to Lagos with the hope of arriving early the next morning. They arrived Lagos later that afternoon due to a robbery attack on the highway.

"No way, my son wouldn't marry a girl from Ngas, never," James's father said in anger.

"Neither will my daughter marry any man from Apa, I wouldn't want him to starve my daughter to death" Sarah's dad retorted.

"Please, one man starving an Apa man doesn't make everyone the same, we are all different" James tried to convince them.

"Never, it's inherited and could spread" Sarah's dad responded.

The fight kept on throughout the evening, it was time to go to sleep when James' father noticed the torchlight Sarah's dad was holding, it looked familiar. During the robbery attack, he had met a man who helped with his torch as they went around looking for a place to hide, but it was dark and he didn't recognize the face.

"This torchlight looks familiar, which bus did you travel in while coming to Lagos?" James' father asked Sarah's dad.

"What's your business with the bus I traveled in," he asked rudely.

*We were attacked by arm robbers while coming and someone helped us with a torchlight" he responded calmly.

"Yes, I remember giving out my torchlight to a man who shared his bread with me also," Sarah's dad said.

"That was me," James' father responded.

In shock, they stared at each other for a while before Sarah's dad broke the silence.

"So there are still good men coming from Apa"

"And so there are still good men coming from Ngas" James' father responded. "Maybe our children were right, not everyone is the same". They spend the evening laughing and joking. James and Sarah woke up the next morning and realized their parents were chatting and laughing together, surprised to see people who just fought last night discussing happily.

"What's wrong?" They asked.

"Sit down and let me tell you the story"

They narrated the whole story to their children.

"We bless you both to get married, we pray our friendship will continue".

After a week, Sarah's dad and James' father both traveled back to their town and shared their story. From that day on, the enmity between the two clans ceased.
