The light flickered like the sound of a gracious woman walking with a stiletto and voices could be heard. Some of the crowd's mouths were open agape while others had tears streaming from their eyes like slaves begging the King to not unleash his wrath. And, they all look at what stood before them. Something unusual but…
Dami was nine years old when the accident occurred. It was a catastrophic event that almost claimed her life and she wished it had as it put her body in an unrecognizable condition.
She was once a happy girl, full of life and lots of energy that people around her could hardly bear. But, they love her. Who wouldn't when her kindness, cheerfulness, and presence fills the heart of every sad and tired soul with renewed hope? She carries a spirit mightier than what people have ever seen and she spreads love and goodness wherever she goes. Now, tell me, who wouldn't love her?
But, a time came when people didn't know she existed anymore and that was after the incident occurred. It was a dark cloudy night and Dami was the only girl in her family of five including her parents, her 2 brothers, and her Mama and Papa. Something happened. A dreadful event that took away her lively spirit and replaced it with a dull, unrecognized one.
It all happened when a new kid came into town and Dami with her lively self, went over to welcome them and there, she met their only son Shefiu. Unlike Dami who loves dancing, Shefiu loves singing and she found out the same day she welcomed them in.
He intrigued her with the sound of his voice and Dami needed to practice more dance steps to showcase at the Town's yearly event which happens a day after Christmas. It is always a delightful event filled with talented souls and Dami is always known to awwn people with her performance.
And so, one day, she went to Shefiu's house and pleaded he sing while she danced and so he did. They practiced for some time until it was time for Dami to return home and Shefiu decided to see her off. But, something strange happened while they walked through the pedestrian road. Night came all of a sudden and the wind blew angrily before the platter of rain was heard.
Dami asked Shefiu to go home so that she would find her way but, he insisted on going with her so they continued their journey. They noticed lots of cars had to wait for the rain to stop but, one car didn't, it moved and a screeching sound was heard with Dami's body flung into a huge tree.
She heard voices and flashes of light almost blinded her before darkness befell her. A beep sound woke her up and she was alone in a strange room. A whimper left her lips as she tried to move.
"What happened?" Her mind asked. She tried to open her eyes but the presence of light struck her and she went into shock. Hours later, she heard voices around.
"Where am I?" She asked with her throat cracky and she felt a warm hand on her.
"Oh, my girl." She heard a whimper. "Thank goodness!" The voice exclaimed before she was given a cup of water.
When she was relaxed and took note of her surroundings, the doctor came in to examine her and took off her bandages before asking her questions.
"A car hit you 2 months ago, do you remember the incident?" The doctor asked and she nodded with tears streaming from her eyes. She could not believe she had been in the hospital bed for that long. Her poor family, how could they have felt? She hated herself for not checking both sides before crossing. She had thought all the cars were waiting and Shefiu…
"Where is he?" She asked her Mama with a panicked voice when they got home. And she got to know no harm came to him.
The accident led to a crack in her spinal cord and her hands needed support to move. Her dreams were lost in one night. No more dancing, she grimaced and this made her lock herself up from the world.
Months passed by swiftly, and it was just a month and some weeks left until Christmas. She wished to attend but she couldn't, not in her state. Though Shefiu always came by to see her still, she didn't speak much to entertain him and didn't want to hear him sing.
She continued living with the pain of never being a dancer until one day when she sat in her room as usual. She heard Shefiu singing and her body moved to dance. She tried to stand many times and failed but she didn't give up and continued trying and trying until she could stand. This newfound strength made her continue trying to move and it worked though she couldn't dance as she wished to.
The day for the Annual Town Talent show approached and Shefiu begged her to come over. To pay him back for making her body move again with his voice, she decided to go and… Her name was called as one of the participants but she ignored it until she heard Shefiu's voice again. He sang the song she danced to on the day the accident occurred and just then, Dami rose to people's surprise and started moving her body.
Some strange energy curled her up and she found herself dancing. Her moves were something unusual but heartwarming and people could not stop saying;
"It is a miracle!"
