Our $1000 weekend break away

It took me quite a while to think about our $1000 weekend. I decided I wanted to find something different. Recently I had a conversation about exploring by train and this came back into my mind.

I found a train trip that I think would be exciting. It runs each weekend and departs from Cape Town and arrives in Elgin Ceres - a thriving farming town, which is one of the top producers of deciduous fruit. These get exported all over the world both fresh, frozen and dried. The entire duration on the train is 10,5hrs. One of the best things about this is that the train is a restored steam locomotive. Choo Choo!

Apart from the train ride being a big part of the adventure, we would arrive at the Elgin weekend market which is held in an old apple warehouse. Whoever did the revamp has taken Art Deco style to the next level modernising this building. You can check this market out here if you'd like to see what I'm talking about. We'd eat to our fill chosen from the food stalls and probably spend some pocket money on local produce from the vendors.

I'd have booked overnight accommodation for us at a local B&B, you can find some lovely places out there, nestled in the foothills of the Ceres mountains with amazing views. Depending on whether it was in summer or winter, we might need to have a nice fire going, roast some marshmallows to make smores after dinner.

On the Sunday we would do a bit of town exploring on foot and simply relax into the atmosphere. Find a restaurant to have lunch at and enjoy each others company, watch the world go by. In the late afternoon we would depart on our trip back to Cape Town and no doubt Lory would fall asleep to the whistling and choo chooing along the way. An adventurous weekend with loads of laughs, memories, good conversation and coffee in a steam train! That sounds kick ass to me.
