You are right, saying you are a good person is one thing and showing it is another. The works or the fruits that we give is what shows who we really are.
Being a good person also has nothing to do with money, because many people who have money, give out of their surplus and not out of genuine love to help others. You have made a great gesture with that partner; now you will both graduate soon and be colleagues.
As for the meeting to pay for the electricity, I've had my share too, and I also end up paying more than the rest. I understand you perfectly, but if no one takes the baton, they would cut off the electricity.
